John Deere B

Ag. students have rebuilt a John Deere B with a serial number of 201000 or greater (late model). Kids are exhibiting at Ag. Mechanic Shows in Texas. The tractor has two levers on the steering pedestal. One for the throttle and the other for the lever that runs the shutter in front of the radiator. The tractor has a single gas tank. A judge has ruled that the tractor is an all fuel tractor and since it has a shutter lever it should have two gas tanks. We have looked at a number of JD B tractor with two levers, a single tank and has shutter. Is the judge correct?

Also have had difficulty adjusting the governor. When tractor was on a dynamometer the governor appeared to work well under load. Off the dyno. the tractor does not idle very good and has a tendency to elevate to a high RPM when the clutch is engaged. After the tractor begins moving the governor appears to work better. We have made several adjustments to the linkages. Nothing has seemed to solve the problem. Do we have a linkage problem or a governor problem?

Thanks

No help on the gov. issue , but my late "B" has the same fuel set up . Shutters with gas tank only . The shutters are there since there is no thermostat is my guess....

Since the "B" had only a thermosyphon cooling system and had neither a thermostat or an automatic shutter to warm the system up, John Deere provided the same manual shutter control lever on both the gasoline and the all fuel models and on the LP tractors also.

Dalet1945 JD B tractor with two levers, a single tank and has shutter. Is the judge correct? No he is wrong!
I have a 52" late model B That has just one fuel tank and it has throttle and shutters levers on the steering post. That is how it came from the factory in April of 52".You might try to open the idle jet a few clicks and enrich the idle mixture. If it lean it will cause it to have a uneven idle speed and tend to rev up.

The judge does NOT know his JD tractors as well as the THINKS he does. Many JD two cylinder collectors THINK they KNOW everything about the JD tractors when they usually know just enough to be dangerous. LOL

As for your governor problem. It sounds like you need to adjust the linkage correctly. You also could have internal issue with the governor itself. Go down to the JD board and there are fellows that can tell you off the top of their head how to adjust the linkage. I have not done one in YEARS. I look it up myself.

Would that Judge be smart enough to read a parts book? Don't sound like it. But if you can aproch him with a parts book, and it is avaible on line from Deere, for free, you might be able to educate him. At least that would prove to your kids that you are correct and the Judge is wrong and should not be judging tractors. So it should help the kids esteeme. And an all fuel uses a hood with 2 fuel filler holes in it. And I have never see a pressed style frame B tractor that was an all fuel, people did not want that low power tractor. They had enough of it with the cast frame tractors that only came as an all fuel. That all fuel only way of thinking is what about killed the Deere line. If they would have just only made the gas versions in the A, B, G & D tractors there would have been a lot less Farmall tractors sold. I have had a 46 B that was only avaible as all fuel and a 49 B that was gas from factory. And as all thermosiphon cooling systems had no thermostats they all had a way to outside control the engine temp so it is shuttors or a roll up canvas curtain. I think all the International built tractors before the 1939 models H & M came out all used that and I understand the B & C tractors still used that system. So he probably would falt them as well with jis lack of knolage. I know I am not a good speller, just an old guy 72 years old that grew up with these tractors.

Our '47 had two levers on gasoline only engine. Same with the '49 sitting in the pole barn right now. Your judge is full of beans!

Yes it's clear that the judge is wrong. Here's your chance to give your students some education on the "people" side of the hobby. How you handle "re-educating" this judge will be another good life lesson to these students on the diplomatic way of educating a lesser educated person without malice and with the best result for all involved. In other words ya can't just call him an idiot and walk. He is probably just unknowlegable on this and what a great opportunity for another life lesson for the students.

Many thanks to each of you for responding to the question posted regarding the John Deere B being an all fuel vs gasoline tractor. I will forward these responses to the kids and they will make it a part of their notebook. Each of you are much appreciated.
