A Tire Story

Well, after a hectic month of trying to get the 2002 F150's issues worked on/out, we decided that the better part of common sense was to trade the thing off! We dealed on a 2005 F250 Lariat SB just this past Thursday, 14 January 2016. Part of the deal was we would switch tires, since we had JUST bought new tires for the old truck before it's problem started - I doubt they had 300 miles on them.

The F250 came with 285/70/R17's, which were down to 30% or so. The F150 had the correct size - 265/70/R17's.

No big deal - since I had a knee replacement just before Thanksgiving, I got one of the neighbor's boys come up and pull the tires off the old truck, and block the thing up. I took them to the local small town (250 people) gas station to get them switched.
So - I gave him 4 tires, still on the rims, and the four tires still on the F250. He basically had 8 dismounts, and 8 mounts, and balance the four going on the F250. He was NOT happy when I dropped the truck off Friday morning at 9:00 am!

I stopped in at 1:00, and he had them done! This is a guy in his 60's,working alone, and runs a full service station - and it was in the 20's outside (no place to pull the truck in).

When it got to the bill, he charged me a whole SEVENTEEN DOLLARS!

Yup - $17 for the WHOLE thing, not for each tire like most places would.

I offered him more, but he wouldn't take it.

Sounds like the place where I stopped in Byrdstown Tennessee the first time we went down there. We rented a cabin on the lake. I should have had the tires balanced and rotated before we left, but I didn't. There was quite a vibration in one front tire.
I found a little shop where a guy did tire repair and general mechanic work. His daughter was washing trucks in one bay. I told him what the problem was and asked if he could just take one back wheel off and swap it out and move it to the front. He asked if I could come back in an hour. We did. When we got back,he asked me again what we were doing. I told him. He took the suspect wheel and tire off, balanced it and rotated them all. When I asked what I owed him,he said, "Aw,seven dollars I guess".

I can tell you from experience what that job you had done would have cost you at the tire store here in town though. I had it done one time. They soaked me $10 per tire to swap rims.

That guy really ripped you off. Kidding of coarse. I am glad there still people like that. Anymore people are out to get as much as they can. I went to a tire shop, and wanted a 15 inch tire. I said it just had to hold air, it was for my chipper. He got it from the scrap pile, and charged me for the dang thing. I saved him a disposal fee. It was only 5.00, but the guy should just gave it to me. If I want tires his place will be the last place I go. Stan

Cherry'd be better, but apple would suit me just fine. I wish the guy who goose hunts on me would figure that out. He asked me what kind I liked. I told him cherry. He brought me apple and said they didn't have cherry. He's been bringing apple every since.
Of course jon f can tell you first hand,it is good apple pie.

Dang, I wish that tire guy was near me. A couple of years ago (the last time I ever did business with them), I took my wife's van into a major league tire shop in the area to have all four tires balanced and rotated. When I got the bill, which was pretty high for the balancing, I saw that they charged me $20.00 to rotate the tires. "Wait a minute," says I, "you took all four wheels off the car to balance them, and now you want to charge me $20.00 just to put the four wheels back on in different location?" "Yep," he says, "that's a standard charge."

Well, it wasn't "standard" to me. We wouldn't relent, so I told him, "Are you sure that's all you want to charge me? Because I can assure you this the last dollar of mine that you'll ever see."

And it was.

Wow. I think you ought to drop him off a gift card to a nice restaurant.

The last time I had some tires swapped, it was around $50 to do 4 dismounts, mounts, and balance. That was at Walmart as they had the best price. I think most places don't really want to mess with used tires.

You had load range E tires on your F150? Why?

I have a niece at University of Toledo and she and my brother have told me there is an independent tire store somewhere in Toledo which repairs tires for free. Doesn't matter if you bought tires there or not. Maybe someone from that area could chime in.

WGM,

A couple of years ago a tire shop opened in Spring Hill, TN named Discount Tire. They have about 6 or so service bays and a large showroom.

If they can patch a flat tire, they will do so at no charge regardless of where you got the tire.

They're always busy and their employees literally run from one task to another. I've asked a couple of them how they can keep up that frenetic pace all day, they just smile and say that's what they are there for.

$5 is fair. You interrupted what he was doing. And he could have said "no used tires, you'll sue me if it blows out".

The guy is running a business. Why would you expect him to give you a tire for free. $5 sounds very fair.

I NEVER SAID I wanted it done for free! What I DID say was that he charged me $17 for the whole job, where most places around here would charge that FOR EACH TIRE.

Probably wanted the guy to pay him to haul it off.
