Give it more gas?

Normally correct timing, advance, caburation, comprression and cam timing contribute to performance.

are you trying to get more than factory rpms?? The govenor will control it and has mechanical limits also.

Well first ya have to see what your working with . Pull the side cover off the gov. and look at where the spring is hooked to , IF you have BIG floppy holes in the two arms then ya start there as the Org. bushings have either wore out or fell out . The two holes where the spring goes thru should be only a shade bigger then the dia. of the spring wire . so you need to make and install new bushings and you have to chamfer both side of the holes. Next you install a new spring. and if the rest of the pieces and parts are not totally wore out you back off the stop screw . But be warned old M's do not take kindly of to many RPM's .

Unless you have a good balanced engine you won't need to
turn the peacocks to check the oil if it's over revved .
Many old blocks with Windows around here.

If you put a tach on the engine, or use a strobe tach, and find it is below the specifies High Idle speed (wide open no load) then work on the governor as described by The Tractor Vet and others. If you intend to spin the engine faster than the original RPM, consider these facts:
It was designed with maximum torque and solid Horse power at rated load speed.
It was balanced by having a two up two down crankshaft with no balance weights.
It has three main bearings, with nothing supporting the crank between 1&2 and 3&4 pistons/rods.
It has a carb and manifold designed for full specified throttle.
It has valves designed to flow well at full specified throttle.
Equipment being used with a PTO will be over speed and dangerous.
Making it turn even 2500 will require many modifications: Ports and head flow, cam changes, ignition curve modification, fuel delivery, venturi size change, and others.
