Hi all. I have a Massey Ferguson 590, S plate 1978. I can drive in high multi power for about 15 mins then the multi power oil pressure light comes on. When i go into low multi power the light goes out. Also i've noticed what seems to be water on the fins of the oil cooler in the front by the radiator?? Any ideas and advice welcome please. Cheers. Good morning, thanks for the advice. Yer the back end oil was checked and topped up 4 days ago. The oil is very clean. Not checked the filter though. Is it the filter that is in the front where the battery is just in front of the radiator? 8)

OK thanks. so what is the next step ? 8)

Well I am no MF expert but my Ford 9000 has the Dual Power which is the same idea. The Dual Power is located in the Bell housing between the clutch and transmission. So assuming that multi-power is in the same place, you need to split between the engine and transmission. Before splitting, get a trailer jack and lean it against the inside of one of the rear tires next to the transmission, Then identify a plate on the side of the transmission or rear housing that you can remove, then fabricate a bracket to go from the holes on the side to the jack. You will then have a very safe and convenient means of supporting and moving the rear away from the front.

Multi-power is not like dual power so don't go there!....primary filter is accessable from below the transmission housing...a tin plate held on with 3 bolts (1/2" heads),,,drain the oil..remove the plate, remove the clip from the rod and remove a nut
and the filter should fall down and out...wash it well with petrol and blow it down with an airline...Secondary filter is in front of the rad...unscrew the housing and dispose of the filter replacing it with a new one. Fill with 15W30 super universal oil to
the top mark on the dipstick marked 'H'. If that doesn't work, there is a valve on the oil line to the cooler behind the right hand bonnet side panel....take that valve apart and see it has a ball and spring in it and they are not sticking....there is
another valve where the oil returns into the front gearbox bearing inside the clutch housing ....but it doesn't often stick...if all that external work fails, it's inside next!....I think from experience your suction/primary filter is dirty and causing the pump
to cavitate....Good luck!....Sam

Hey Sam, that's some very very good advice, thank you so much mate. My heart sank when i read in the previous reply about splitting the tractor. So from what you have told me i need to drain all the back end oil out first before removing the first filter at the rear end underneath, right? If i were to unscrew the filter in the front by the radiator before draining the back end how much oil would there likely to be in that? Thanks for the sound advice buddy. Ray 8)
