Now there's something I've never seen before - thought this was pretty cool.

This video is flux core mig welding.

I always assumed the splatter was splashed out of the puddle itself - looks more like it pops before it even gets there.

So that's not welding but building up? Seemed like the wire/rod was far away from surface.

Pretty cool. It's amazing how low viscosity the liquid steel seems to be. Electrode doesn't look to be that far to me, only about four times the wire diameter, that's pretty close, actually, for spray transfer. The other is probably short circuit transfer, which makes more splatter.
