Lottery.......just a thought.

Got to thinking, It would be nice to go to bed one night, and the next day wake up a millionaire.....but apparently if that happens, Im in the wrong house.... ;)

As I have gotten older the thought of winning that much money has less appeal than it did when I was younger. I used to day dream a little about what I would do if I won a lotto. It all revolved around farming bigger and not working off farm. Now I just do not have the energy to expand the operation. I guess I could help the kids out more but I am not really sure if that would be a good thing long term for the entire family. I lean towards thinking that the next generation would not have the skills needed to keep it going if the current generation did not have to "earn" what they have.

So these days I would just like a small winning ticket, maybe $250K or some thing like that. Just enough to have some fun with but not a ridiculous amount.

If I did hit the BIG Powerball I would endow places like the Mayo Clinic. The help they have given both my wives is priceless. So I would like to see more independent research on cancer and Diabetes. Those two diseases are terrible in how they destroy a person body. The Shriners hospitals would benefit as well. Plus the Salvation Army, they are a class act when compared to the modern day Red Cross.

The odds are even longer of this ever happening as I do not buy Lotto tickets. LOL

I second your thoughts on the Salvation Army! Many many years ago I was in that stupid automatic pay donation stuff where I worked until those bums at united pay scam messed with the Boy Scouts of America. Some real good memories when I was in and I do wish I had done more. When they started that crap I was so not there. My lead boss was not happy at all that I dropped it. I would drop a check off at the south Jersey head quarters. The next year several others dropped their donations cause of some of the shadey money deals. The ARMY!

Somewhere I read a good one -- if you win don't tell your friends. First call them and tell them you're in a bind and could you borrow $500? Likely they'll say no. When they find out you hit the jackpot--- what can they say?

Don't forget you will lose half if you take it in a lump sum payment and almost another half to taxes. That would mean your $250K would be $125,000 and then roughly 40% tax (Fed, State, fees, etc) would knock it down to $75,000.

Concerning the Red Cross. I had a great uncle who fought in WWI. When he was wounded and they thought he would die, so he was placed in a tent with the dying men. The Red Cross came in and SOLD paper, envelopes, stamps, and pens to these men. Later, in WWII, my father's ship went into Seattle WA for repairs from a kamakaze attack. He traveled across the country to go to his mother's funeral in NYC and was denied a place to stay by the Red Cross when he had to stop to change trains. A local policing agency allowed him to stay in a cell.

My family does not give to the Red Cross.

I heard a similar story from my college landlady regarding her family member who served in WWII...Red Cross was selling things to them as well. Hardly a "free" canteen.

If I were the single winner of it 2 places would get a rather large donation. St Jude's Children's hospital in the Twin Cities and the U of M medical research center in Rochester MN for cancer research.

I'd give a couple of people who owe me money exactly what they owe me then before they could stick it in their pockets demand what they owe.

Every bum I know, mostly related, who made terrible life decisions would come out of the wood work. I wouldn't give em a dime. Got one niece who's married to a drunken bum. Wouldn't help her even though she's a good kid unless she dumps the bum. Helping her would only give him more money to drink.

I'd like to tell the boss I quit, but she'd tell me to go fix my own supper, and oh, by the way, you might want to warsh some unnaware if you want some clean skivvied tommorry. Seriously, the Shrine Hospitals, St. Jude, and the Wounded Warrior Project would all benefit greatly. The farm will still be here when I return from my trip, only there will be someone else to do most of the hard work. I might just retire some and go fishin and huntin and shootin more....

I bought one Lottery ticket Saturday, thought about it, and you know what, I'm glad I didn't win. Yes, it would be nice to help out family, friends, community and charities, but that is just way too much money.....

Id start my own charity, I would enjoy helping kids go to school, buy instruments and sports equipment for kids. Help out folks that have worked hard just had some hard luck. Lots of need out there. People don't have million dollar emergencies, but lots of times getting caught up on a heating bill or some tires for the car to get to work make all the difference in there world.

Odd the stories of folks winning big, 5 years later divorced, broke, facing jail time. And no friends, the old ones didnt get along any more, and the new ones weren't friends once the money ran out.

I could spend a million, so would need to win 2. But after than, not really sure what good it would do. I'm kinda simple on stuff.

It would seem the odds at getting rich farming are better than those for winning power ball. That's a depressing thought.

I would simply buy a tractor I didn't have to work on, help a few charities. Always thought I would buy the company I work for and get rid of the people I didn't like. But that would mean I'm still connected to work. Getting close to retiring and don't choose to bicker anymore, even when I'm right.

Fellow one the radio remarked that he wondered, since now the jackpot is really big, why people think they oughta break down and buy a ticket, as if when it was just $100,000,000, it wasn't worth the trouble? gm

You do realize that you are ten times more likely to die in a car wreck on your way to purchase a ticket than actually winning?

Just keep on farming until it's all gone. Maybe with a little newer equipment, and maybe it would take a little longer, but it is bound to happen.

Paul, I agree!

The morning talk radio was disusing this. Talked about the requirement that the winners name be publicized. That invites every scammer, con artist, freeloader, you name it, here they come!

Said one of the worst is frivolous law suits. Once accused, the choice is to hire lawyers and fight, or try to settle out of court.

As for me, I choose to keep the simple life and my money in my pocket!

A surprising number of winners will squander it all in 5 years. One family bought 3 mansions in 3 different states then a Lear so they could just fly to one when they wanted. They never thought about a staff for each home, upkeep, taxes and utilities. Plus the Lear. IIRC they lost 2 of the home to tax seizures because they were demanding too much for em. Plus if you look at the number of pro sport figures who made millions, then retired and within a few years were broke.

I would buy the absentee landlords farms and spend a day at the nearest stockyards and for that one day I would make a bunch of farmers happy and buy them all, then spend the next week getting rid of them win lose or draw.

I think the first thing that you would have to do is hire around-the-clock armed security guys to keep you and your home safe. There have been million dollar winners here that had their house broken into and ransacked in an attempt to find some money. Not to mention all the people that come to the front door with sob stories in hope of getting some cash!

Here we are too close to the border where kidnapping for ransom is a common occurrence. You would have to spend more time protecting yourself than protecting the money!

I understand the kidnapped for ransom and being to close to the border, but here its Wisconsin and Illinois. When I drove truck I would pray to God that I would not ever die in Illinois, I wanted to die a free man

I bought another ticket just so the wife and I have something to talk about. That much money would be a headache. It would be nice to have enough coming in to keep the bills paid but, the rest I would set up a perpetual charity to help middle class folks that don't get help. Maybe help some young people get started in farming.

I've never bought a lottery ticket and plan is to never buy one.
Many people who have come into a large amount of wealth by lottery winnings have ultimately been ruined by it. I got to thinking about how one could avoid that. Give it all away. Thought about giving it to churches. No, that would not work. Church members would get into arguments as to how it should be used. Churches would be divided and split up, so not a good idea. Give it to your county government with stipulation that gift was to pay every citizen's real estate taxes each year for as long as funds would last. Results = No tax in ------- County would cause population explosion in county by drawing in new residents wanting no tax to pay. County government officials would become giddy with big money plans and go on spending sprees building lavish new schools, gov't buildings, new cars for sheriff dept. garbage trucks, etc. Money ruins county....bad idea again. Better off not to win big lottery, just stay poor.

No good thing comes from money that you don't work for---or almost nothing. I don't buy tickets, keep my bills paid, don't buy anything I can't pay for. If I time it right I'll use it up before I die and my kids won't have anything to fight over so they'll stay friends for life.

First I would give everyone I know $1000. That would get all the friends and relatives off my back as they would not have the nerve to come ask for more.======Or would they?
