Open center/closed center

I just replaced the spool valve on the SuperM.The new valve is deadheading.I work the hydralics on the 3 point or remote, oil circulates, works as it should.Release the handle,it deadheads. Did I get a 'closed center' valve? Can it be converted to open center? It is a Cross 2 spool. There is a "power beyond" port right beside the outlet. The valve is a lightly used valve that came on a (JD35) loader I bought at a sale. I put the old worn out valve on the loader and put the new valve on the tractor.Thanks. Steve

Bought the loader at a consigment sale. Have absolutely no idea what tractor it came off of.Am makeing it into a 'quiktach'.built brackets,mounts.......Powering it with the tractor hydralics(mag pump).Plugging the loader (valve) in to the remote. So, the oil goes from the remote on the tractor,to the valve on the loader.

Dang it! I can't get pictures to load tonight for nothing. Sounds like it's been on a Deere. Some of those valves can be changed, some can't. I've got one here that,if I remember right, all you have to do is move the hose fitting from the top of the valve to the end. On the other one,and I know this for sure, there's a big plug in the end that you have to change. I've got close ups of both valves and that plug that goes in for closed center. I tried three times to load them and none will.

Based on the comments it sounds like some experimenting might be in order but make sure you are safe if you do that. Paul

Steve the most common Cross valves can be switched back and forth. There is a plug on the right side of the vale that you change to switch back and forth. The short plug #14 is for open center and the longer plug #43 is for closed center.

So can you use the Power Beyond port for the return connection? Looks like Power Beyond goes where the short plug should.

The closed, open center and power beyond plug all go into the same place on the Cross valve. You need to have an open return circuit to sump on your IH tractor. So it either needs to be at the control valve or in the power beyond circuit.

I converted a Cross valve from closed center to open center once. Since the closed is just a longer plug, #43 in JD's, pic with an O-ring to seal it, I just cut or ground (I can't remember which now) off the longer portion so it looks more like #41. This simply let's the oil bypass to the return oil outlet.

Either cut off the end of the power beyond plug, or find an ORB fitting that fits the port. Right now, when the valve is in neutral, the return oil is dead headed against that plug. The oil returning from the cylinders goes to the return port.

Nothing to add to the below posts except that I have put two Cross open center dual spool valves on SM's and they were both able to convert to closed center and do power beyond so I'll bet yours can be switched back. The ones I bought also had a float setting on one of the spools.

Simple test is remove return hose from tractor with both levers in neutral if valve is closed center configuration no oil will exit hose when pump is pumping and if in open center configuration oil will exit return hose.

IMHO an IHC super M doesn't have enough hyd pump pressure & flow to need a power beyond hose attached to valve which case plug(parts key 14 in JD Sellers photo) would be the correct plug. I put several control valves on IHC tractors back in the 60's & 70's plumbed like that that operated very good.
