What is a Chain Fall? Hit me with the answer, I know I will fell stupid when you tell me.

Chain fall, chain hoist, hung from above and used to lift with.
Pulled a good number of engines out of cars with those things.
Still have two or three around here.

Here that would be known as a chain hoist. I've lifted a few engines, even installed a cab on a 930 Case with it.

A lot of the old timers that I used to work with called them chain falls, maybe it was a carryover from the differential chain hoists
that we discussed last week.

Thanks for the answer and picture Royse. I have one of those but don't have a beam. I have just been using my engine hoist, you know, the one that sits on the floor and rolls. But mine will not handle a 6 cylinder engine.

And, keep up the pictures on your project Adirondack case guy. I have a 4320 with cab I need to do the same. Are you going to paint it?

Nope, a chain fall can refer to any chain hoist, either geared or differential. I think of it more as an industrial term than chain hoist. Heavy Boilermaker work we always called them chain falls, even air powered cable hoists.
