Passing on a tradition.

My dad did not cook anything, but ocasionally when I was a boy he would make fudge, and once he did it with me. When I left home and my kids were small I would ocasionally make some after the kids were in bed. The next day they would ask who made the fudge, but I always said it was brought by the fudge fairy. It was always my intention to pass along the recipe, but everyone liked the whole fudge fairy thing and would ask when the fudge fairy would visit again, so I kept it that way. Lol After my kids became adults we quit buying them christmas presents, but the fudge fairy would leave some fudge for each for christmas. This got to be a really big deal for them, and they always started asking about it a month before christmas. At random times, when one of the kids was having troubles, I would make some and drop it at their house when they weren't home. The teasing of the other kids was fun to watch. As I'm getting a bit older I thought it was time to pass on the secret recipe. My oldest grandaughter asked to come over and make some, so she got to be the first. We had a great time and she was very pleased. We shopped for ingredients first, then came home to cook. I really had a good time too. It's amazing how the little things turn into such a big deal.

Some things that don't happen often need to be taught. From Butchering properly, to making food from scratch, the result (like the corn bagging below) is the most important thing we can do. When it has a tie-in to experience and is exciting, it is worth every minute. Jim

GREAT!!!!! Knowledge passed along is part of the glue that holds a family together. Plus your grand daughter gets an afternoon spent with her grand father. Another great thing.

Is that peanut butter fudge that I'm seeing in one pan? Now you've got my sweet tooth watering right when I need to be eating supper.

Sorry, no peanut butter. That's just the sugar, butter, milk, honey mix. You have to boil that for 8 minutes before the good stuff gets put in.

Teaching a kid how to do something gives them a sense of accomplishment, which is one of the best things that you can do for them.

LOL It's OK Jon, we all thought you were a fairy!

Good that you are starting to teach the grandkids how to make fudge.

My daughter worked at pizza hut while in HS and college. So this past Christmas she decided to start a new tradition. She grilled 3 pizza crust the night before. Then instead of my traditional Christmas meal, Chinese Carryout like in Christmas story, my daughter taught my granddaughters how to make the pizza of their choice. Last pizza was awesome BQ chicken. Also the kids made a ginger bread house for the first time. A great New Christmas Tradition.
