fella that helps me a lot broke something on his shifter cable linkage ,,seems that the problem is all on the dash side ,, all seems well on the tranny ,, we were able to get it home by shifting into gear while I held the brakes ..can anyone give us any tips for fixing this , he is mechanically inclined ,, and don't mind delicate work ,,

Did not look up parts diagram, but if it is anything in there like a 02 Ford Ranger, could be on the shifter shaft, there are a couple of torx screws on the end that are bad about working loose and making the gearshift not work. Look around the floor mat, you may even find one of them.

If its not coming out of park then look into the brake lamp switch and wiring ( brake lights work? ). The switch can fail along with the wiring at the switch from constant movement

If the shifter feels sloppy or doesn't go into park or lower gears then the shift shaft/tube is probably loose or broken. This is the tube that the shift handle is connected to and runs down the top of the steering column to a bracket for the shift cable. Often times these bolts come loose, if lucky you can tighten the bolts, they eventually break if not. Look at the end of the steering column basically above the steering shaft coupling and you should see a bracket that the shift cable mounts too, two T30 torx botls hold that bracket to the tube, make sure they are tight.

This very thing happened on my 2001 F-250. Went to leave the in-laws farm and the lever flopped all over the place. You kind of have to stand on your head to see under there but like you say there were two screws loose, one was on the floormat and the other was halfway out. Can't remember if I had to remove any trim pieces or not, though.

I feel it's the shift tube also. Or one of the bolts fell out of the cable bracket
where it bolts to the shift on the bottom end. The Ford base numbers of what you
might need are 7212, 7r264, & it wouldn't hurt to replace the 2 7L278 bushings
Bolts on the outside of the column they are about the same design as all the later
Fords with column shift, not a bad job & doesn't hurt the wallet as bad as other
repairs. Just make sure the two lower bolts that bolt the shift bracket to the end
of the shift tube are TIGHT when done. Parts should total to around 80.00.
Good luck..
