For old tanker fleet post

From you fleet post it seems a lot of stuff today is handled as a specialty item or service. What used to be done in town or at a dealer is sent out. Starter ,magneto as examples. Many items have to be ordered and they come from say two or three places in the whole USA. Or you find a guru that deals with them like wisconsin or lauson engines Just my observation.

Very true. Carburetors are another example. No one works on them anymore it seems.

But as items get older and there are fewer of them around demand drops. And if the equipment you are working on wasn't made long it's good luck!

But businesses have to be able to take money in to stay open. Can't really blame them. Just a major inconvenience sometimes.

In one of the places that we lived, our next door neighbor was a retired mechanic. When word got around, he couldn't keep up with rebuilding carburetors and automotive generators in his basement. No matter how much he charged, people kept bringing him that type of work because he was one of the few people that still had those skills.

Odd trend . I used to see three to 6 carbs per day , on the vehicle or carry in from other shops. That volume dropped off drasticly over the years. Last year I saw an upswing in carb rebuilding in my shop . Lot of collectable and vintage cars, good market, those guys dont usually ask price, just want it done right .

I was quite surprised when the old guy closed up the carb shop near us. But then found out he's still working, just out of his son's pole barn. Seems as thought the overhead, taxes, employee costs, bad neighborhood, etc drove him out, but his quality work kept him busy. Just needed a cheaper place, because he couldn't feel right charging enough to pay for the building, etc.

Last automotive carb I was going to work on was a Rochester Quadra-Junk. When I looked it up in the flat rate it turned out cheaper to buy a reman and install it.
