OT - planter box

This planter box was my Christmas gift from my husband. I know that I'll need to water plants frequently but think I'll enjoy it. I'll use it for vegetables.

Later this winter, he's also going to build a box for inside our rusty, old manure spreader. That will also be used for vegetables.

I already looked at them and they are real purdy too. Those frosty pictures made me shiver. S'posed to get down to 15 here tonight.

Thanks for the pics.

Yeah, not sure how this will weather out. But we just thought it would be best since it's going to be full of wet dirt a good deal of the time.

Have read where applying vinegar will "grey" wood - but don't know about with green treated. I figure it has to turn grey eventually. :)

P.T. wood will weather to a nice 'old' grey in about 5 years if left alone (not treated or pressure washed). How do I know this you ask ? I have built about 7.23 million decks with P.T. material and have seen the results. There MAY be a small exaggeration.

Don't know about vinegar, but exposure to direct sunlight will do the job. May have to rotate your 'planter' every now and then. P.S. Actual count of decks using P.T. material is closer to 50, also built about 20 using Cedar, and couple using Redwood.

Thanks, Bob. Good to know... I can wait 5 years. (Took about 3 on our cedar outhouse... wasn't sure about PT lumber)

Beautiful picture as always!
Looks like a great job and a great idea.
I wonder how many pests it will deter being up off the ground.
Maybe it will at least keep out some of the smaller ones?

Royse,

Thanks. I'll tell my husband.

I also wondered if maybe I can plant peas again - but though they should be safe from rabbits, probably right at chin-height for the darn deere.

Our cats will probably take care of the rabbits. We have four in the barn and they're great hunters (mice, rabbits, pocket gophers)... but they probably cannot take out a deere. LOL

Paul MI,

Right, she started lifting her feet shortly after she hopped up there... and then (of all things) she licked them.

Yep, have to love a frosty sunrise.

I have read if you soak a steel wool pad in the vinegar overnight and then use it will cause the wood to look weathered. Never tried it so I cannot verify this.

Sweetfeet, I have a set of wheels just like those with the hubs. I am going to build a running gear so I can pull it with my tractors. I notice it has hubs stepped down on the front axle so the wagon bed remains level. Could you get some closeups of the front axle showing how the tongue attaches and how the hubs are attached to the upright spindles and the steering setup.
Sorry to ask so much. You can send me a message and I will send you an email with my address if you would rather do it that way.
Thank you very much.
By the way, someone gave me the wheels and hubs that had been laying in the woods for a LONG time, So they are nice and RUSTY.

Dick,

My folks had a house cat in their later years. They enjoyed its company.

Our teen daughter has two fall kittens in the basement for winter - but they will be moved to barn come spring.

sms,

Yes, it bears a strange resemblance. :)

Ours won't look as pretty as yours when you put flowers in it... but we'll have fresh veggies.

I saw that same thing on some show on PTV. I may try it on a scrap of lumber just to see what it does on treated stuff.

That is a valuable running gear. If the bearings are good it is a $500 UP gear in Amish area.

farmerjohn,

Thanks. That's our '31 Farmall Regular by the lean-to and the handles sticking up behind the wagon are from our Little Genius plow.

To answer your question just look at 95% of the gears built in the 40's, 50's, or 60's Even the new 10 ton gears are made same way only heavier.

J. Wondergem,

Nope. My luck the wind would catch it and then I'd have to pick up broken glass. It gets crazy windy here, especially since our building site is so open... it's about 'nuf to make one curse. LOL

Loren,

Too funny! Daughter and I have thought the same thing upon seeing pics you posted of your cat. :)

Miss Katie is 10 years old. We also have one of her brothers, a 15# yellow and white. They were born out in the garden building, and abandoned or orphaned by their mother which was a stray.

This cat was wanting in around Christmas 2014. He never wants out. My wife is holding him. Hal

Can always put a few plain boards on the outside too, then it weathers(faster) yet is protected from the dirt and water inside.

I use the viniger and fine steel wool like #0000 to weather model railroad wood structures. It works very good but the wood I am using is very small (HO scale) so I dont know how it will work on 2X6 lumber. -Noel

PapaNoel,

Thanks, I think I will test it on a scrap piece to see what happens to the green treated. If nothing else, just out of
curiosity.

That's nice. I can tell they have a great home with you and your wife.

I like cats... not much of a fan of dogs.

If you see this look for garden hoops, SWMBO found some and we were going to put them over the wagon like a covered wagon with netting to keep the critters out.
