JD 350 Dozer

I have a 350 JD Dozer, about '68 or '69. I loaned it to my neighbor and now it doesn't turn correctly. I've had it for about 20 years and have had to adjust the turning brakes and clutch, but never had this problem. When I turned to the right the right track stops and the left track keeps moving to turn. When I move the opposite way both tracks stop and won't move. Help !
Thanks,

Sounds like they might have broken the right hand drive axle or stripped out the center splines on the steering clutch.

Hate to hear your problem. Old tractors often have unknown fractures which still work with light loading. Rough treatment and hard work can be the straw that breaks the camel's back. It's like loaning your chain saw, rarely do they come back in good shape. Hopefully your neighbor is a good guy and will tell you what he was doing when it quit. I sold my D4D (about 1965) this year, it was a good strong machine but I know it is waiting for a final drive failure. So for a big job I rent a new machine.

It is not your neighbors fault, it was going to happen at that point in time no matter who was driving it. We need a better description of your problem. The levers control the steering clutches; pull'em back part way & it takes that side out of gear. Pull it back all the way & it stops the track on that side. Sounds like when you pull back on the left side steering clutch lever, both tracks stop moving? But pull back on the right side steering clutch & it operates normally?

That is what is happening. When turning left If I pull back on the lever control half way it will turn a little bit , but if I pull it back both tracks stop. I'm not blaming the neighbor just trying to get to work better. Thanks.

OK, so your right side steering clutch doesn't work part of the time. I'm assuming both tracks drive it forward when not pulling on the steering clutch levers. Have you pushed on a stump or something immovable to see if the right side continues digging or does it quit turning? A broken right axle would simply let you spin around & around, BTDT. Most likely grease has leaked across the seal & soaked the clutches on that side so it pulls some but not under full load. Or someone has taken the plugs out of the bottom of the case so oil leaking across would not soak the clutches, forgotten they did that, & ran it in water/sand/mud, which went up thru the hole into the case & ruined the clutches.
