I will be 71 on the 5th. I want to buy an older used Payloader just for my own fun and use and not that much use. Have a 10 wheeler Paystar 5000 and haul a little fill.

Looking at the John Deere and the 444----544- 644. The 444 is a little feller but might be my size.

What do you folks say?????????

Many brands. I would ask repair shops (service writer) from several brands, which correctly sized units are popular and need primarily routine service and wear surface rebuilding. Jim

If you are talking the old ones (no letter suffix) they are very tough, but eventually the torque converter can fail, and if it does, it can spoil 20k if you let the Deere dealer do it. There are cheaper ways to get that done, though.

The newer ones, E series on up, have a more reliable hydro setup that can run for a LONG time.

If looking at an older one, see if you can spin the wheels pushing against something. If you can, the system is pretty strong yet. Also look for wear at the center hinge, as well as all the fluids, etc.

Good luck and have fun!

I like the old 544's, they are not as fast as the newer models but dependable, make sure their is no water in the engine oil, i have replaced a lot of the engines in them with 329 combine engines that work out well

I'm going to throw an idea at you, I owned a 544B for about 10 years for business and it was a great machine, however now I'm retired (67) and last year bought a T190 Bobcat. It is exactly the right machine for me, easy to move and a real work horse. And with it being a track machine even a average operator like me can do nice work with it. Now you mite say too much money for a hobby machine but the way I look at it when I'm done with it should be an easy sell. I have three attachments pluss the dirt bucket and I think there are about 50 different attachments for these skid loaders. If you olny have an occasional use for an attachment like say a hydrahammer then rent one. Anyway just a thot. Mark

I say buy what you want and enjoy it. We both will be 71 on the 5th. 1945 must have started out to be a good year lol

Ah but how many of us are in our right minds?? If you do not understand what I am saying then means you think with the left side of the brain

I got a Bobcat 773 just this year and love it, very versatile. Mine came with hard rubber tires and I added over the tire steel tracks. Just about bullet proof in mud, snow and ice. I'm using it to clear trees and now I'm feeding round bales with it because we have an inch of ice over six inches of mud and my truck is making tracks I don't want next summer.
