Niche Farming

There have been a few threads here over the years about folks wanting to find small, niche crops that would produce a better return per acre than "standard" crops.
Anyway, I just came across this article and thought some here might be interested in it
Chinese Medicinal Herbs

That is not far from here Delmar, NY. Interesting to say the least Jerry ! Kind of like Ginseng, they pay a lot for that and believe in its use.

Thanks a million for posting this!

We are always looking for niche farming ideas for our students.

At least when they are in the classroom, they think organic is the way to go. Not sure what they think when they get out into the real world full of real world pests.

Not to be a Negative Nancy but the average farmer has issues competing even in niche situations. The Amish are taking over the small produce stand business due to better financing on their farms, reduced overhead (no vehicle, vehicle insurance, communications, and low cost labor (many children). The Mennonites have made a presence in the machinery business namely repairs for similar reasons. As long as they are in good standing in their community they will get preference for services offered versus non-Mennonite businesses. Non-Amish and Non-Mennonite farmers are getting to be a minority in the area and with the internet they will drive hundreds of miles for a better price on products such as used machinery.

Organic you are correct they just dont know the problems here they grow crops weeds bugs and breeding show all the problemsd corn falls down beans get weeds ect they need to go back to checking corn so they can cross culivate ect good productive ground will also have healthy weeds ect. But population is then a problem cause 16,000 plants dont yeild very high and 100bu corn isnt very profitable with land taxes ect.

Just came back from Delmar to deliver my wife's coffee to her at work. Can't picture any place in Delmar that is doing what the article suggests. Delmar is a suburb of Albany. If this were the holy grail of farming, everyone would be into it. One could probably make more off from growing hops or marijuana and I would venture the guess that both are being grown in NYS with great profit. From what I can see, the Amish are not super farmers, just more tradition rooted farmers. In NYS, we still have many dairy farms that are small and turning a handsome profit for those willing to work hard and not feel the need to buy more expensive new equipment than they really need.
