Son finished the last income ciferin' fer the year. 120,000 pounds more milk produced than the year before. $40,000 less money than last year. Sounds about right fer farmin' don't it? Milk price is still dropping, too.

Bruce,

Only good thing about it is that the young lad has enough Jersey blood in the herd and his per cow production is close enough to his all Holstein friends that his price has held up better than his friends. It pencils out that the 3-4 pounds less per cow he gets compared to his friends is more than offset by the protein and butterfat and he is better off than they are.

He did say that if this year would have been as good as last year, he would have finished rebuilding the last 40 feet of the original barn so he could raise his own heifers instead of buying replacements. Maybe next year.

I was doing pretty good for the year until I sold the last of the spring steers. They were almost half of what I sold last fall. Looks to be at least $20,000 less than last year. It's no surprise but it still stings a bit.
