It's too bad that the prison couldn't give the left over food to a food pantry. That, or put the prisoners on a ration of bread and water for a week. Maybe after that they'd be hungry enough to clean their plates.

Entered the army in Feb of 67, first thing drill sargent in mess hall said to us; "take all you want but eat all you take". Few days later same sarge said "you olde fat boys remember this, what you put on today I take off tomorrow".

I too am in the garbage industry, I see simular too. One thing to remember too is that it's all on a scale of operation too. There is always waste even at home it happens with food. When you have a dinner party of a half dozen people you make enough you don't run out. Usually a plate or two of leftovers, now imagine feeding thousands or tens of thousands, they likely cook thousands of pounds of food a day, so a couple thousand pounds of waste a week is too be expected. It sounds like a lot but percentage wise it's not much, same with grocery stores that handle tends of thousands of pounds of food a week, it's not surprising sometimes not everything sells and some spoils, I can tell you tho that for a grocery store that takes in many trailer trucks of food a day we only empty there trash compactor every week to two weeks so can't be too much going to waste compared to what's moving thru there!

Makes me sick to read about waste like this. And to think this is just one station out of how many? Tens of thousands? Our government at all levels is totally out of control.

Didn't the exhaulted one and his USDA just announce some "Stop food waste" movement? Sounds like they need to start on the inside.

I read somewhere recently that in some European countries that laws were passed that what food doesn't sell in grocery stores/ markets has to be donated to some kind of charity.

Let those people starve for a week and then see if they will eat that food.

We have to much of a throw away society here in the U.S. today.

Prisoners should work for their food to survive like everyone else on the outside. You don't work, you don't eat. Bring back the 'hard labor' sentence. That will help their appetite.

I don't have much sympathy for people that end up in prison. That's not saying everyone there belongs in prison though. I'm talking about those that commit serious crimes like murder, rape, and such. Other than having to be locked up 24/7 they live better than a lot of people do on the outside. I'm for hard labor sentences too. Make them work for their keep.

European and Mexican prison system have labor requirements- the resulting products often sold in regular markets. US prison systems are restricted in marketing output, some legislative acts to protect union labor, etc. Maybe ship the violent felons, child molesters to a outside prison system, pay some for keeping them in Siberia perhaps? Sheriff Joes Maricopa County road cleaning crews might be something other jails could use as example. European unsold market foods to charity? - last month was article about seconds and blemish veggies going to soup kitchen and food pantry equivalents in Italy, another in Greece around Athens? Early in 1900 in US and many other countries, the hogs were the garbage disposals for edibles- had a trichinosis problem at times. Egypt has a garbage problem especially around Cairo- the nnalert Brotherhood election winners couple years ago said they would handle the garbage, the Copts would be out of work. The Copt/christian private pay garbage collectors/recyclers had some hogs taking care of edibles, hog herds were killed as unclean and source of swine flu. Cairo had some pile of stinking garbage piled up awhile, still have some.
For US prison system edible garbage? a herd of hogs to clean up would be useful clean up crew, source of humor for the guards and something to p*ss off the Black nnalert. save food budget, provide some food for prison system and reduce it some more-- or a source of food pantry bacon. Federal prison in Leavenworth was self provision at start, inmate labor for growing food and livestock. Parchmont in Mississippi has farm land, grows cotton and prison food stock. Minor problem with some inmates refusing to do 'plantation field N!&&#@ work", that may be a problem in some northern prison systems with a political active populace and their lawyers. Minnesota Farm Industries(?)/Prison Industries(?) was market name for prison made ag equipment- was a short thread about running gear and a grain elevator with those markings awhile back. Sharia law doesn't have that much of a problem- if troublemaker can't pay restitution, the castrate and sell as slave, give sale price to the family of the accidental death victim, blood money instead of execution. Fugitive thieves, carjackers?- chop off right hand, left foot-- or alternate t*sticl*s so they can still be useful labor. There are some examples in other countries, some old practices in this country that might be brought back. Some old southern prison abuses that were also known in northern prison regarding contract prison labor just watch for proper convictions. RN. .

A few years ago I visited Marion county Florida and drove by the county prison and they had a large garden. Lots of men in green and white striped
clothes working in the garden. The state prison in Starke (Raiford) is probably a different story. Maybe the county prisons should supply the state
prisons with vegetables.

the prison near us, stateville federal penitentiary, near joliet il, had a huge farm surrounding it. good behavior prisioners got to work on the "honor farm" it was a minimum security facility next to the max unit. inmates worked the farm and the food was used at the prison, any excess was shipped to other prisons. they had a huge dairy, beef cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens , and other poultry. they also gew corn, beans oats, wheat, hay and silage for the animals too. was a great system until the food distributors cried foul as they didnt get to sell food to the prisons. lawsuits were filed and eventually the farms were shuddered. there are still some of the buildings surrounding the prison. what a shame. if you go to mapquest and look up stateville prison joliet il, the go to satellite view you can still see some of the old barns and the size of the farms. the sections north of the prison were also part of the farms. prolly 3 square miles or so.

Sounds like someone needs to see if any local press might be interesting in that. That would make a good story for the news. Oh wait....most of the abundant media I know of would not want to be a part of exposing waste in government. It might make someone in the government look bad. Several years ago I lived in a local school district that was always asking for tax increases and bond issues stating they were out of money, and the kids were having to do without things. What infuriated me was my wife and I lived very close to one of their elementary schools, and we would often walk nearby. During the summer months when they were not even in session you could walk by in the evening and every air conditioning unit on the building was running. One reason I never vote for a bond issue or tax increase for schools or government is the waste and always trying to keep up with one another.

Follow the money. Most prison farms were shut down because both famers and food suppliers cried to the government that they were loosing sales to prisons. So close the farms. Now everyone is happy except the tax paying public. Then they can feed the prisoners stuff that makes em sick of is bad for the them because we have to provide health care to them too. So standards for how long something can be kept popped up.

In the 80's they were passing out free beef, imported to Europe to soldiers during some of the government buy outs. The original plan was to pass it out to people on welfare but both farmers and the meat packing industry cried that they would loose sales if the welfare folks didn't buy their beef with food stamps. So at great expense to the tax payer it was cut, frozen and wrapped, then shipped to Europe and given to soldiers and their dependents. Picked it up at the commissary, 1 10 pound pack a month per ration card holder. Most of the single soldiers living in the barracks got theirs and gave it to married soldiers who would consume it. That ran for about 9 months.

Hey Ron, want to see where SOME of your tax dollars go? Every time I go to pay the taxes. Just shy of 3/4 of my tax dollar.

Not just prisons anywhere lots of food goes.

We use to get "pig feed" from a local pantry, mostly bread some veggies. Sometimes two three loads(squatting a F350) a week. If we weren't hauling it, it would of be dumped in a landfill. What's worse is a lot of it was overrun from a local commercial bakery, and the people didn't even look at it(but boy they had to have that national fluff stuff, brand). The truck would come in sometimes, it would be unloaded from there right on to ours for pig feed. Our freezer was stocked well with bread till we quit hauling from there.

Glen, I used to service commercial kitchens all over and there were also a few prisons too. You know what most of the population was and they would do stupid stuff like open three boxes of the little salt and pepper packs when only one was needed. Same for mustard ketsup etc. Want to guess how much got tossed? I'm standing there with my mouth open and the kitchen manager says "we are required to this amount by the state." "dayly rations" I would love to see the good old labor camp type of prison. Way too much PC.

That's a violation of their
rights! lol. Which should be
forfeited the minute they
were convicted.

Yeah.....75% of my $2500 tax bill last week went to the local school district I live in. And this is a rural town of about 600 population, AND they tried to get a bond issue passed this year, it failed, and they want to try again in April (notice they dont wish to wait until November when there will be a bigger turnout to make things more fair! I'll be back in April to vote no again.

Jeffcat,
Where do you live,? i thought you were in South Jersey. I see by your tax chart you are not far from me ,i'm in Kingwood.

I can remember a time when prisoners had to work to pay their way in prison. At that time they tried to escape. Now days there are some trying to get in. Not long ago a woman was caught outside a convenience store. She was sitting on the curb waiting on the police after she had robbed the place. She told them she just wanted a place to stay. She got it.
