O/T 2014 Tax Returns

We were a victim of tax fraud this year...

We just got our tax return last week on the 16th. They even paid us interest which we'll have to claim on income...Our tax lady told us two weeks before getting our return to hang in there because some have gotten them and some haven't.

I'm happy now...

Happy Holidays to all of you.

So if any of you haven't gotten your return "Hang in There"

Taxpayers can't keep up with all the tax laws, and easier to just pay in more during the year and have it refunded at the end of the year.

Lawmakers feel pressure to make quick returns to keep getting voted in, so the returns are speeded up with little checking.

IRS doesn't need to spend more and more on internal checks, so they just send out refunds today, and check through returns over the next 3 years for mistakes.

Scammers figured out, if we send in a fake return with someone's info, we can get the refund issued in our name and cash it before anyone checks it out.

Fixing this means IRS will bloat up with many more on their payroll; or everyone's refund will take close to a year to process.

So far it really has not been fixed.

as a retired cpa with over 40 years in the tax prep business let give you some advise. plan to not have a large refund and then there is not enough for scammers to go after.if you are an employee reduce your withholdings accordingly. work with your tax advisor if you need help with this. rick

I always keep it so I have to pay in. I may have to pay a small fine if the amount is too high. But at least I'm not waiting for them to pay me.
Two years ago I miscalculated my state of Michigan tax. I got my return the following February after about three phone calls to them. So judging from that you did ok.

I would not be surprised to find out it was an inside job, of course it will be covered up if it is. There are a lot of incompetents, bottom feeders and outright crooks in the IRS, more than in a normal government agency.

Actually, they catch it very quickly when the second return is e-filed. That is when you start jumping thru hoops. It would help also if they would curtail direct deposit to U.S. banks and make the bank responsible for a certain amount of policing. Lord knows, they do it to me as a CPA. I think simply holding all refunds until April 15 would be good. You would catch the vast majority of duplicate filings that way. Anyway, it is like everything else, they aren't going to fix it as long as they are making money on it and getting a bigger budget.

Bingo!

For decades, I have arranged things such that I send a check every April 10 or so.

Why would I want to loan money to the federales for them to squander?
