Just got diagnosed with a full blown case of Shingles. From the left knee up to the waist, all around the thigh. Blisters, oozing mess, raw meat and sharp pains.

Anyone ever dealt with Shingles and what should I expect? Doc prescribed Acyclovir for the Shingles and a med for pain.

Bad deal--my dad at 78 and some heart weakness was taken with shingles.
You are probably a strong young fella.

Not a good deal. Both my parents and my MIL have had it, although not as bad as yours sounds like. Take any advice and medication that you can get. Sounds like it can last a long time for some people.
This fall I got nnalert for it. I think the recommend it for anyone over 60 and some who may be more susceptible to it. I think I may get the pneumonia nnalert next time I need to go to the doctor.

I hope you recover quickly. A neighbor just went through a case of them. It effected him all summer. He had days he could do little if any work. He is 63.

Got them when I was 37...on my face. Felt like pins sticking me, sensitive to light, oozy sores and watering eyes for a couple of weeks. Skin very sensitive for a year or two...at least I didn't have pants or underwear chafing on top of it. Good luck...

Sorry to hear that ! Had Shingles in 2011, some days had to sit on 'pillows'.
Wish I gotten a vaccination earlier !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone that had chicken pox, SHOULD get the preventive shot !

I had a slight case of it when in my late thirties. No where near as bad as yours. It was on my back where I couldn't reach it, and the Doc had my wife rub calamine lotion on it. I have had the shot from VA in the past few years, and I know I never want to get it again.

Had them several years ago. When I went to the pharmacy to get the medicine prescribed by the doctor, the pharmacist suggested to also get some Benzocaine spray. The effects of the spray didn't last too long, but was helpful at night when trying to get some sleep. Wish you the best for a quick recovery.

Shingles is nothing to mess with. A man in my Sunday School Class had them about a year and a half ago. They were on his face and in one of his eyes. He has lost almost all of his vision in that eye. The doctor told him there is nothing more that he can do. My friend is just supposed to live with it and, maybe, maybe, his vision will improve with time.

I hope you can whip it quickly. You are young enough to turn out OK in the end. Marilyn had shingles twice when she was young. The first time was during finals in college and the second time was when we were young married. She was miserable for a couple weeks, then got over it. Dad got shingles when he was in his upper eighties and it took him down. He never has completely recovered. I didn't think anything would take that man down, but it happened. I was close to 60 at that time and dad told me as soon as I turn 60 I WILL get the shot. Marilyn and I have both had the shot and hopefully it will do its job.

My ex-sister-in-law (my brother's ex-wife) got the shingles a few months ago. She lost all of her vision in one eye and about half of her vision in the other eye. She is in her mid-50s. They have been telling her that her vision loss is permanent. After seeing what it can do, my wife and I are seriously thinking about getting the shingles nnalert. She researched it and found out that it can only be given by a doctor's prescription, so by the time we pay the doctor's fees and the cost of the medicine (which, BTW, is always advertised on TV, so you KNOW it will be priced very high), we've put off getting the nnalert until next year.

I had it once. It usually effects a "nerve trunk system" (for better lack of a term). Different for everyone. Mine was in my left upper shoulder area. The antiviral meds are critical as fast as possible. Had to sleep upright for a week before things started to calm down. Reasonable after that if the area wasn't touched. The damaged nerve area in my back took about a year to heal (numbness spot kept getting slowly but surely smaller).

The clinic told me that my health insurance did not cover the $285 cost of the shingles nnalert. Did some more checking and found that we could go to a Safeway pharmacy and our health insurance would pay for the shots, so wife and I both got the shot 5 years ago. If you have health insurance do some checking; it may be covered.

I got Shingles in a long oval on my forehead, left eye & right side of my nose in July,'13 and the skin still feels odd & itches. Upon my MD's recommendation I visited my optometrist who stated I was lucky my vision was not affected. My left eye to this day itches & waters more than my right eye. I felt no real pain just aggravation due to my ongoing nerve damage but I've read where pain of Shingles can be intense

I took Shingles shot in Sept this yr and recommend for it for anyone who may be susceptible to Shingles.

Had the Shingles 2 years ago on left side of my face and in my scalp. It got dangerously close to my eye but thankfully did not get in my eye. Dr. prescribed Lyrica which made me feel worse than the disease. The $285 shot is a small price to pay to avoid this level of pain. I got mine after I had them.

At first I balked at the nearly 300 dollar price tag until I talked to a couple of people with shingles. They talked like if they had the chance to do it over they would mortgage the house for the shot. I shelled out the three hundred bux on my next trip to the doc. TDF

My neighbor got them about 5 years ago. She went to the doc and he gave her some meds for it. About 2 weeks later she was talking to her son about it and he told her to take Llyzine (sp) along with the meds. It still had to run its course but within just a couple of days she sure felt better. I don't know if it was the Llyzine or just luck but it might not hurt to try it.

Herpes and shingles are symptomatic of immune system problems/weakness. People seem to be susceptible to these viruses who are deficient in vitamins B-12, C and the amino acid l-lysine. Vitamin B12 deficiency is prevalent in those who consume significant amounts of sugar and/or alcohol. Our modern diet is generally deficient in B12, C and l-lysine for a number of reasons attributable to conventional agricultural practices and the refinement of food. Today's medical professionals are generally trained to address the symptoms and not the cause. I will not go any further, as what I've said already will put some folks' hair on fire.

WOW ! look at all the replies so far. This disease is rampant.
Never ever barely heard about it a few years ago.

Wrong, you don't need a doctors order. Most pharmacies do the shingles injections. Got mine at the local Kmart.

dad had it for 2 years on his legs, was trying to get rid of it with homemade medicine from a 1890's doctors book. Had to go to the doctor for something else, Dr took 1 look and gave him the shot along with a prescription salve. He got over it, took several weeks. Dad went thru the depression and simply wouldn't spent the money for the dr or the meds till he had to. If you have it get it taken care of no matter what the cost.

Back in the early 80's when I was about 20 I got shingles on the left side of my chest along the cress below your breast area. They really didn't have much for treatment back then and of course it was in the summer and I had to go to work, The doctor didn't think I needed time off for this so I was in misery to say the least. Most miserable summer I ever had having to deal with this condition and all I got were some shots of antibodotic and some pain meds witch didn't help much. Seamed to last for a month and it left me with what I can describe as I took a shot gun blast to the left side of my chest that over time looks a lot better than it use to. This is something that is not to be fooled with, I guess being young helped me get over it better but I still know how much it hurt and the scares it left me with as a reminder. Bandit

I had those shingles around my mid section{belly}. Could not stand straight ,so much pain. Dr.perscribed a salve to put on them. It helped but did not take away all the pain. Had the scares from them for many years.
This was all back in the early 80"s. Havent been bothered since.

I had them around my mid-section 25 years ago. Doctor prescribed some kind of a drug and it didn't take long for it to go away. They are painful. Worse thing was my wife had never had chicken pox and she got them from my shingles, she was sicker than me.

Pretty much all the older people I know have had it before. A family member has had it twice when run down and sick with other things. Extremely painful is all I can say. I remember my grandmother dealing with it.

If you are a veteran get signed up with the V A. They give me the shots on on my yearly visit. This year it was flu and the second pneumonia shot. Had shingles shot last year or earlier. Some say shingles come on because of stress.

Yes, a friend of mine got the shingles shot and became extremely sick. Turns out she never had chicken pox so the shot messed her up but the doctor never asked if she had it.

yep, if you had chicken pox in your lifetime, the virus is in you sleeping.
It'll wake up.
Immune system hit, stress, even a bodily injury near the nerve cluster where the virus is sleeping...might wake it up.
To the poster, if Acyclovir doesn't help, have the doc switch you to valtrex...not generic..valtrex.
Like the other posters said, once you have had it, you will know the starting 'tingles'. Get on the meds then, don't wait.

After your flare subsides, the shot helps..get it. not a 'cure' you can still get shingles, but less often and not as severe.
I've been checking on a new 2 stage doctor only shot. It was going thru approval last time I checked.

My shot was free under my Blue Cross insurance plan. Didn't hesitate to get one.

funny getting medical advice on a tractor site, but I never realized there was a nnalert.

I don't really get how that works if the virus is already in us- how a nnalert would teach the body to fight what's already there... doesn't seem to make sense. But - good to know whether or not I understand it.

I had chicken pox REALLY bad as a kid - I was deathly ill for months. I don't know if that has any bearing on how bad I could get shingles, but it was bad enough to make me not want to even find out.

Glad you brought the topic up.

Got shingles on the left side of my neck during a strike. Dr. asked what I was doing lately to add stress to my life, particularly since I only had them on one side of my body?

I was a manager and had to work repair for a phone company. I was climbing poles and as all the terminal boxes were set on the right side of the pole, I had to reach out and work with my right hand. I am left handed and it was a strain to first off be 25 feet up in the air, and next to lean way out and force my right hand to cut off and terminate the wires.

He replied... That would do it.

Still occasionally get little prickly sensation after all these years from nerve damage. Dont ever want to go there again. Got the shot last year as I was old enough to qualify.

I attribute mine to a motorcycle trip I took. It was a nice sunny day in southern Utah in October, so I decided to ride my Goldwing to the farm in South Dakota to help out cutting silage. When I got to Casper WY the sun was down and it was cold!! I rode a couple of hours shivering and the pain between my shoulder blades became unbearable. I stopped at the rest stop before Lusk and slept in my sleeping bag for a few hours. Sun came up, went the rest of the way with fairly decent weather. Cut silage for a week, then headed back....50 and drizzle. An hour into the ride and the pain was back. Took the south route to Denver and stayed overnight. Snow in the morning so I went further south thru northern New Mexico and AZ, warmer but extreme head/side wind. Made it home by 11 that night, but my body was beat. I got shingles about a month later...I still cannot ride more than an hour without getting pain between my shoulder blades....

Still occasionally get little prickly sensation after all these years from nerve damage. Dont ever want to go there again. Got the shot last year as I was old enough to qualify.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions. I WILL be sure to get the nnalert after I get over this mess. This is my first time dealing with this and I sure wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

Thanks again

Hope you read this again cause there is more!! My doctor about three years ago told me about that shot and also told me about another. There is a shot from Merck for pnumonias..spelling. It covers about fifteen types. This year he said there is another to cover like thirteen more types. In old age it can be a real killer so get them too! One guy at work go that a couple of years ago and he looked like someone beat the cr***** out of him for a couple of weeks.

I had shingles about 6 years ago. I was laid off from work and working for a crew putting up grain bins that summer. It was hot and my right side chest and back started itching and broke out in red spots. I was really uncomfortable driving home, decided I wasn't going to put up with this very long. The Drs Clinic was closed, so I went to the Redi Med in the mall and the foreign lady Dr looked at it and said I had shingles. She said it was a good thing I came in early, most people wait a couple of weeks to come in and then the medicine isn't as effective. I don't remember what the drug was she gave me, but it helped some, made it bearable. I went to Walgreens to pick up the prescription and asked the pharmasists if there was any cream or rub that would help out. She gave me a tube of Capsasin. She said it was made from jalopeno pepper juice and would help even tho it wasn't labeled for shingles. Silly me, I bought a tube of the stuff and went home and showered and asked my wife to rub some on my back and chest. She rubbed in a abundant amount, it was cool at first. Then it started getting warm, then it got HOT!! Next thing I know, about 15 minutes in, it was on FIRE!!!! I went down and showered 3 times trying to get the dang stuff off and stop the burning. I came back upstairs still hot but not as bad, my chest and back were fire engine red. Wife said her hands burned from rubbing it in. I didn't use any more of it, wore loose shirts and worked everyday. Lasted 2 to 3 weeks before it finally calmed down. I got a shingles shot after that!!! Still from time to time I feel itchy on my chest and back. I told my wife to get the shot, she didn't want what I had had, so she got the shot, about $280.
A year or so later, she came down with a mild case of shingles. Not as bad because of the shot, but still shingles. While I was at work, she decided to try the Capsasin. I came home and was she HOT!!! She told me she rubbed some on and then the fire set in. She said that that was worse than the shingles and why didn't I throw that crap away after I tried it. I guess it didn't help that I was laughing my butt off while she was telling me about it. I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would buy that stuff more than once, but someone must because they still sell it. We for sure won't be buying any!!!
You will be miserable, but most likely survive them. Good luck, Chris

Had it in September. Located on my back and under my right arm. Lasted about two weeks.I am 52 years Pain was not real bad, but hurt at night while I was trying to go to sleep. Doc gave me Tramadol and 5% lidocane to put on it.

Doc asks me every visit about getting the shingles nnalert. I've never had chicken pox. Been exposed to them a million times. Doc says I must have a natural immunity to chicken pox and drops the subject. Both of my sisters had them. All of our kids had them, but both my wife and myself have never had chickenpox.

Longmeadowfarm: what can I change in my diet or take as a supplement to address the issues you spoke of in regards to the shingles post? Thanks in advance.

My wife had shingles in 2010. She had it on the right side of her scalp and face. Luckily there was no eye involvement. She had just been diagnosed with diabetes. Two months later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her nurse practitioner and a radiologist told her the shingles indicated the deeper underlying problems that were weakening the immune system. Her body was trying to tell her something. She is perfectly fine now.

I immediately went to the health department and got the shot. We had United Healthcare at the time and they paid for it.

My wife later got the shot because she did not want to get shingles a second time (it can happen). Blue Cross Blue Shield paid for this one. Some insurance companies cover it after age 50; others after age 60 so check your coverage. We never realized shingles was so debilitating and hit so many people.

Usedtobeiowadave,

B12 is normally produced by certain cyanobacteria. Animals and most plants cannot produce it and absorb it from their food and gut bacteria. You need at least 3 ug (micrograms) of B12 per day.
A normally functioning liver stores enough for at least 4 years but you will start to gradually feel the effects before you give out.

If you get pernicious anemia which is an autoimmune disorder you will not be able to absorb oral B12 and have to get it by injection.
It takes much more B12 taken orally to be able to absorb even a little b12.

I had to leave before I could finish the last post. You also need to make sure you have adequate levels of folic acid (folate) and vitamin D3. Pa can mimic a lot of things, but it can affect mind and body. People used to die from it and still can if it is not diagnosed. At least 2% of adults over 60 develop it.

My mother developed it when she was in her 80s. She acted almost like a vegetable and was misdiagnosed with alzheimers. It took a great doctor (he modestly called himself a country doctor) to discover this even though the big hospital doctors missed it. If left untreated too long permanent neural damage can result.
I developed it before age 60, but the pernicious anemia was not diagnosed until I was about 62. I just thought it was age. Symptoms can include:
1.shortness of breath when working (I was blowing like a horse)
2. hand held items seem 2-3 times heavier
3. sleeping too much
4. Unstable balance and gait
5. Unclear thinking or fogginess
6. speech problems
7. paresthesia
8. bleeding gums
9. memory loss or slowness of recall
10.depression
