One down, one to go!

We caught one of the calfs!

I'd like to come here and describe our amazing cattling prowess, but... truth be told -

He came home all on his own - jumped through the fence - and he's back with the herd!

Guess he just got sick of playing hide and seek.

This is the one we thought got shot. So - looks like the hunter that fired at him wasn't just blind enough to mis-identify him, but blind enough to miss him too.

Great news. At least it cuts the loss down, and maybe that calf will help lure the other in. With this year's group of heifer that I have, of the three times I know I had a animal outside the fence, twice they went right back through the fence to rejoin the group.

Now, to just keep said fence hot at all times...

They don't go feral as quick as some animals. They're a herd animal and for the most part, they'll try to be with their own kind.

I had an old cow one time that was getting out every day trying to eat apples that had fallen outside the fence. A neighbor drove in one day to tell me she was out. I told him not to worry, she'd come home when she was ready. Just then she came plodding up along the side of the road,up the driveway and walked right out by the gate and stood right there waiting for me to let her back in.

funny thing is, we spotted this guy about two miles away last week, and he was seemingly comfortable where he was as he stayed there all week. He'd move away when we approached, but he always came back. We fed him there, and tried to get him used to our presence.

He was there on friday night, so we thought for sure we'd catch him there Saturday morning when we'd have more people available to help.

Saturday morning came, my friend went out to feed his other cows to get ready for the trip out to catch this one - and there he was, just standing there in front of the gate.

he never really knew this as home since he ran out of the trailer straight off into the woods when he first disappeared a couple weeks ago. So it was some REALLY good luck that he found his way back after all that chasing.

yeah, not many herds around here, but those that do have cows are aware that we're looking for one.

we set up a few "traps" in the area where it's been seen - some panels with a few extra heifers, hoping he'll find them and stay nearby. Also have some other panels around them to lock him in if he's close - or we can circle around and push him in.

You are lucky you didn't have to pay for damage or trespass if he was on another's land.

a cow elk joined mine & next door neighbors herds. Three of'em escaped from enclosure & this one switches between our herds.
