97 Chevy wiring

A friend has a 97 Chevy half ton. As soon as you hit the switch the tail lights pop the fuse. If you roll down the passenger window they come on.

Any idea where to look for bare wires that could cause that? I'm thinking probably under the dash somewhere.

My idea was to run a new wire from the switch or a toggle, to the tail lights. That should eliminAte the problem, but it would probably pop up again later in the window wiring too, wouldn't it?

t in ne,

I'd like to help, however what where the conditions that caused you to have problems? What switch are you operating?

Sorry, but I need a tad more info to be of help. door operation seems to change the game...more detail is needed.

A common point between the tailight wiring and the window switch could be the instrument lighting circuit... are there backlights in the window switches?

If so, wiring in the convoluted rubber tube between the door and pillar could be damaged/broken/chafed, or the window mechanism could be somehow pinching the wiring harness inside the door.

97 has backlit door switches, you should start your search in the door. Even if it does not have power anything, the wiring may still be there.

He tore the door apart and moved stuff around. Now the tail lights work. Never gave any thought to the backlighting.
The passenger window switch is now dark.
We'll tear it apart sometime and find and fix the problem.
