Road crews must be bored ?

North Central Ohio and so far we have not had any snow and VERY nice weather most days. Road crews must really be bored because this morning I see the tell tale signs from them spraying calcium chloride all over the roads ! or as they call it brine. Not the first time they have done it this fall either. What a waste and that junk is still getting on our cars eating them up in this beautiful weather.

Mike M, what part of North Central Ohio are you in, county, I am in West Central Ohio, Auglaize county. And as I understand that brine is not calcium but beet juice that it is made of. Has been nice here as well but now sounds like going to be below freezing that I do not like, cannot take the cold.

I thought they were all working on I-75.
That's what it seemed like when I drove up and down it a few weeks ago from Cincinnati to Toledo.

Not here in eastern Nebraska. We've had no appreciable snow yet, but we had some 3" of rain earlier in the week. The road maintainer operators need to be out doing the roads same as in the middle of the summer.

I spend my Days in Wayne Co. and nights in Ashland Co.

I think you are the fellow that came up and looked at my JD # 26 rear mounted manure loader many years ago ? If so thanks again for the copy of the sales brochure.

Busy here in Wyoming, south of me on I-80 they had 357 miles of it shut down for almost two days, we only got about 6' out of it, a shot out my window last night

Do they spray calcium where you live? I've got old vehicles with over 300000 on them. The point is calcium chloride sprayed roads eat vehicles up.

Yup, they are out laying salt down on the bare roads here in NY, too. Then when the snow finally gets here the DOT will be whining about how they are out of salt and they need more money to buy the stuff.

I live in Wisconsin and they also put the brine down. In Wisconsin it is not beet juice it is salt brine. If you drive on it when it is wet you are doing a lot of damage to youe auto. If it is dry it still can cause damage but if you run your car through a car wash once in a while you can undo most of the damage.
The auto makers are not pushing it, it is the insurance co. The state tells the workers to put it down to help prevent ice build up, to try to save lives. You can replace or fix your car ,but a human life is more important then a auto.

My neighbor works for the county road commission, he's the night shift for his garage. Weather like this and he comes home most mornings with yellow paint on his hands- like the Navy, if it will hold still, paint it!

I really question how well it works ?

As the roads seem slicker than ever when it snows and I also see a lot more people in the ditches. But a lot of that is distracted driving too.

Are you sure its calcium chloride? I heard that they had switched to magnesium chloride. Then they get two different types of corrosion.

Where is this? I've never seen NYS D.O.T. apply rock salt locally until its eminent that conditions necessitate it, storm coming, ice conditions predicted etc. A friend worked for years out of the local facility doing that work for D.O.T., clearing snow and spreading salt. They never did that here until just before a storm or weather event was to arrive, but its not the first time I've heard of it elsewhere. They use rock salt, it gets pulverized once applied to dry roads, turns to dust, then blows away with the wind or traffic. The town uses mostly coarse sand, with just enough salt to keep it flowing.

No amount of washing will stop the corrosion from taking place let alone reverse it.As to keeping drivers and their passengers safe, those drivers should learn to drive in less than ideal conditions or park their cars!

I really don't know exactly what it is. But last year when I had it on my car I wiped my finger on it and tasted it and sure was salty ! so then I proceeded to wash down my car.

WHAT I have seen is it keeps from making black ice,but itis kind off slimy. If people would just slow down it would solve a lot of problems. I don't think you will ever get people to do that thoe.

Here in Oakland County, Michigan, the road commission has a brine well, so salt brine is almost free. They put it on the road ALL YEAR LONG to keep down dust and ensure nobody owns a vehicle more than ten years old.

We are a nation of commuters. A single accident can affect 1,000s of other drivers. I'll take the road salt over gridlock.

I washing the underside of vehicles every spring and have no trouble with them lasting well past 20 years without rust trough.

Not here. Think the brine is applied by a independent contractor. Did note the grader truck made numerous trips past here on our gravel road. Usually two passes is enough - one each direction. Did a nice job, as roadway was recently well wetted by rain.

They put some salt on the state road by my place about a month ago. We did get a light dusting of snow but the roads were bare. I believe the DOT drivers were just practicing.

Well I wish they didn't use the brine, the sand and rock salt mix worked about as good and wasn't nearly as damaging to your vehicle. If people would get their azz out of bed a half hour early in bad weather, they wouldn't have to drive 80 mph on ice to try to get to work on time. Just my opinion.

Where do you live ?

You do not see rust free 20 year old cars and trucks in Ohio unless they were parked for the winter.

Where they actually applying any material? School buses and garbage trucks will make a dry run to check out new routes, especially when there is a change of drivers.

Was not sure if you were the one that had it or not. I have seen a couple since. Was a nice visit.

They do that on gravel roads in the summer. The county went by here just after noon today putting it on the blacktop. They must be expecting lake effect that might stick to the road.

But liquid treatments are so concentrated that they can leave roads slippery when the solution dries. When I get out on the main road the morning after they spread it, I have to drive up a mountain side. Tires will spin much easier because of the residue. Noticed it immediately after it was put into use.

Mike M ,
It may have something to do with budget. If highway doesn't send the money by a certain time, next year's budget will be cut. Use it or lose it may be the reason. Last year when workers had nothing to do, they were cutting the brush back along the county roads. Picking up trash too.

So were the ones you saw around your area too ? Were any for sale ? Sure would like to know what one could expect to get for one.

I work for Mn/Dot, we don't have any snow here in SE Mn, so we are out cutting and chipping brush. Nobody's favorite job. Pete Merry Christmas to all.

The Iowa DOT puts down brine on bridges and in cut areas of the road if there is a frost warning for the next morning. They use a salt brine for this.

One was on a tractor at a show and if I remember correctly one was in an old overgrown barnyard and had been sold for scrap. Supposedly.

You should call them and ask why they are doing this. I'd like to hear their reason for doing it.

M dot has been out cutting dead ash and brush on both sides of the road in front of my place for the last week. Left a lot of wood to clean up. Know what I'm doing this weekend. Glad they cut them down some were real scarey.

Well lo and behold it snowed tonight ! Not much but snow all the same. Wonder if that junk on the roads does any good especially after it has been drying there for at least 12 hours ?

Pennsylvania will send the trucks out onto 6 inches of snow pack with a load of salt on and not spread a bit of it.

Too cold, won't work. But they have no problem putting it down at 4 so the roads are nice and slick when everyone leaves work.

I would tell them to go get some empire state salt, their roads were bare by noon the day it snowed.
