Disk Question For Tractor

What would be the correct wheel disk size for a 45 horsepower tractor? I'm thinking a John Deere or Frontier model.

10 or 12 ft. Really depends on what you are doing. My 56 horse (dualed)SM plays with a 10' in most conditions. However some places(steep hills on freshly plowed ground) work the liveing snot out of it.

depends on what tractor you have, a current model so to speak with a hyro trans I would not go over a 7' one,, like Steve said a older one like a IH M can handel more

You should be able to handle a 10' wheel disk with no problems. I pulled a 10' disk with no wheels with a JD A or the Farmall M and they handled it just fine.

We could disk cornstalks or soybean stubble with a 12 foot disk and 45 hp. Was a breeze.

In spring we barely got soft dirt leveled down with a 10 foot disk and the same 45 hp tractor. Was a real load on the tractor.

There are tougher, heavier, more aggressive disks that take much more hp. Might need 300hp to pull a 15 foot version. I know you aren't talking about one of those....

If you are looking at a three point 2 gang disk, weight of the disk becomes an issue. A 10 foot wide one can be too heavy for a 45 hp tractor to lift; the front end of the tractor will raise instead.

How is that for a worthless complicated answer to what you thought was a simple question? :)

I was thinking a 10' disk would be about right. The tractor is 45 horsepower, 2wd. The soil is sandy loam, and some of it is on a small hillside used for potatoes.

Sandy loam here. A dealer will tell you 2 foot of dish per 10 HP. And that's pretty close to being dead on. Got a friend with a Ford 4000 and all that wants is a 7' disk. Even that will try to make the tractor dig a hole sometimes.

I have a friend with a 43hp kubota and it pulls a 6' disk well I think it would not have enough traction to pull much more, however I pull a 10' wheel disk with my farmall 340 and a 12-14' behind my M depending on what tome of year and moisture in the ground.
