Best and Worst

Donald's post below got me to thinking (dangerous)....How many have had two or more of the same vehicle/tractor/implement where one was bad/troublesome(worst),one was oustanding(best)?Probably the worst tractor I ever had was a very early(SN 637) 706D.Always something wrong.........Owned it only about 3 years. The best is my late 706D(sn44000)Owned it 31 years(so far),has over 11,000 hrs(expect 11000 more out of it).All it's ever needed has been a clutch/TA and injection pump.

I had that same thought. Dealers used to say never sell somebody two of the same model of anything. One will always be better than the other. I have to agree with you on the 706. I had an early one. Worst tractor I ever owned, but I had the good sense to never buy another one.
I haven't had a lot of doubles, but the ones I've had were about the same. Two Case SCs,two Oliver 77s and a Super 77,two 66s,three Super 55s. No real complaints with any of them as far as one being better or worse than the other.

WORST 9n fords I had to try to run for cranky old neighbor dam things would never start. he had a newish 14t baler and they would not run it, had to get it out of sight of his house and go get dads D17 or WD45 to bale hay.

Delta honestly back in about 1980 2 loggers (close friends of mine) stopped at a saw shop and bought 2 chainsaws. Same model, type etc. probably one serial different. One cut logs forever, never any trouble the other would not run long enough to cut anything and spent most of its life in the dealers shop. We always said it did not have an original part left on it, finally got traded in on a different one. I always pitted the person that ended up with it.

Dad's pickup is like that, 81 half ton. It's one affliction after another, bumper to bumper. My 81 one ton goes and goes.

I have certainly seen that in aviation. We had one Saab 340 in particular that had quite a reputation for uncanny behavior. It was known system wide by all the crews and outstations as "Christine". Some of it sounded unbelievable except that I've experienced it firsthand. The things that airplane did......you just shake your head.

got sumthin odd like that between a 96 crown vic and my 2000 Lincoln town car ,, the red crown vic came here with peelin clear coat .crakt tail lite lenses , over 200000 miles.. that was 5 yrs ago ,,. ist time I changed oil it was like jello coming out,,.. put some atf in it and it has been a great trouble free car for last 60000 miles ,,..BUT got the low mileage Lincoln at auction for a steal ,,. but made up for it in repairs , air shox , wiper motor , heater core , air conditioner pump intake manifold ,coilpax and spark plugs , brakes , tires . twice put on same rollback,, broken axle and electric fuel pump// my 2 CASE DCs pull and work as a team of mules would ,,. one as tempermental as the other ,,.. but , WOW ,,. whenever they work great ,,. they can hold their own against a pair of 4020s ... lol ,..

I bought a new 79 F150 2wd. The next year I bought a 78 F150 4wd, except for the 4wd they were the same truck. The 78 model was one of the best trucks I ever had and I used it like a 1 ton. The 79 stayed in the shop, I traded it off with only 40K.

Saw that on the flight line on the Air Force, seems a few of the bombers gave us most of the grief a few others always came home and all they wanted is more fuel and another flight crew for another mission. Heck we had one that ran off the runway two winters in a row so we kept it on alert all winter, which would require we fly it heavy in the spring, summer and fall to meet it's annual flying hours, about the 3rd mission in the spring she took a lightning strike that blew a hole in the vertical stabilizer, she spent all summer down at Oklahoma City Air Logistics getting the tail fixed and we had to fly it through the next winter to balance hours.

Neighbor always jokes, you have to buy one that was made on a Wednesday, Friday and Monday made items are going to be the bad ones!
