O/T water proofer

After researching and looking at many types of "horse outer wear" I spent a pretty good chunk of money (about $300) getting a blanket for my old mare. Its a Weatherbeeta, 1600 denier, "waterproof". Well, its not water proof.

I've had the blanket for a couple of years, but never used it much until last year. A couple of weeks ago I used a full can of scotch guard on it. I had never been around to check after a rain until this morning. It rained off and on all night. This morning I went out to check and it was soaked and so was she. I am not happy.

Can anyone recommend a water proofer that really works?

I would think that some manner of shelter from the elements is in order. I have used the Weatherbeeta and they work very well when they are used as intended. Around here, the morality police (Humane Society) would be on premises taking the horse away for animal cruelty. It is a little overboard but that is the way it is in upstate NY.

I have three sheds available in the horse pastures. Most of the time they go unused. Horses will be under the trees or just walking around grazing in the pasture.

Nancy,
Sprayed the patio furniture cushions with Neverwet? by Rustoleum and it works great.....make sure you get the one for fabric.

Funny thing is that no one told the horses they should stay inside when it rains!!! Plenty of people have horses with shelter available, horses outside eating in the rain. Been raining for 24 hours here, where are the cattle, out grazing on stalks or pasture, not hiding under trees or down in the hollow. Someone should tell the critters. gobble

Nancy I do not know of any thing that would be water proof for your horse. I did use some water proof show blankets years ago on cattle. So word of caution about anything water proof. I darn near lost a show calf because he just about over heated under the show blanket. The trouble is most things that keep things water proof also hold it ALL of the heat the other way. That is fine IF you know it will not warm up. In your area I think you are still getting times of warm weather. So just watch for the temperature changes.

She never used to get cold, but since she is now pushing 30, things have changed. If I don't put some sort of weather protection on her, she starts to shiver.

What I have, at 1600 denier (density) is very heavy. Best description I can give is its like a Carhart jacket, but no quilting or insulation.

It is supposed to be waterproof, but breathable, like goretex. I've never had her sweat or get too warm with it on. It came with a fleece liner which I add when the weather gets really cold (at least for our area).

She has a run in shed available, but as mentioned above, prefers to be out, which is why I put the blanket on. If it did what it was supposed to, then being out in the elements wouldn't be a problem.

Could you sew some Tyvek (house wrap) on the blanket ? It is very light and is a 'two way' membrane (won't let moisture in, but 'breathes from the inside - like Gortex). HTH

Put a gate on the shelter, bring out a pad of alfalfa in the evening, and lock it up in there overnight, or when rain is forecast.

Since she is pushing 30, i would leave her in if it s raining. I did that with my horse today before i went to my water polo games. I don t know how old my horse is but he s old. Anyway, leave her in when it s raining and turn her out when the sun is showing.

Well I use petroleum jelly on my leaking plastic grill cover that looked
like it should be water proof . It helped alot

Fabric softener. I would try a half a cup in the washer first time. If you get too much into the fabric you will never be able to wash it again.

They wax carhartt coats but I dont know if that would make a problem cleaning the blanket or how heavy it would get. Just google "wax waterproofing coats".

My other thought is you could sew a rain fly for it. Same thing as a tent with the waterproof layer of tent material. Hard to find the material though.

Have James hold an umbreller fer tha critter. Sheesh, he aint got nuttin better ta do sides sllep wth tha dawg when its rainin.....

Nancy. look at a product called Canvek. We use it to waterproof our hunting tents. Daughter used it on some of her horse blankets and it seems to work. I also had one of those blankets and took it back after a good rain. Got my money back. We can get some blankets here [Oregon] that are made of canvas that work very well. Will try to get you a name. We do get a little rain here. Did I say it gets wet here? well it just rains.

Nancy, I don't know what this stuff is, but it looks like it will work.

On our old canvas tents and tarps, we used to use Thompson's Water Seal. Would put a couple of coats on with a brush. They never seemed to leak. Our scout must have had 20 tents and we did them every other year.
