Salvation Army Red Kettle Donations

Do you think donations have suffered because less people pay with cash and don't carry any? I almost never carry cash or pocket change. Always liked to put a little in and feel kinda silly when I don't have anything on me. I just try to smile and say Merry Christmas to the bell ringer.

I always try to throw a little change in. They are one of the best for using the money correctly.

I'm sure it has hurt them. But seems Salvation Army has one of the best reputations for the donations going where they should. That helps with the big donations. Saw where someone put $500,000 in one of the kettles!

I was told that the CEO of Salvation Army only pays his/herself around $30,000 a year and is supplied a modest house. The rest of the money goes to charity where it is needed. They are a great organization.

I send them a small check instead of putting a buck or two in the kettle. I spent 21 years in patrol car and saw many times where the Red Cross sold stuff, but Salvation Army was always right there giving things away whenever needed.

I have given to them for years but never give a dime to Red Cross. Note that Red Cross is connected to Red Crescent in nnalert countries, so you cannot be sure that your donations are even going to Christian causes with them.

I too, like the Salvation Army. Here is the pay range for their workers...

"The Salvation Army Salary
The Salvation Army average salary is $50,908, median salary is $35,547 with a salary range from $20,800 to $250,000.
The Salvation Army salaries are collected from government agencies and companies. Each salary is associated with a real job position. The Salvation Army salary statistics is not exclusive and is for reference only. They are presented "as is" and updated regularly."

Around 2006 or 2007 during Christmas time, I gave a friend a rife to Big Lots so they could do some shopping. I chose to remain outside and sat on the window sill close to the SA bell ringer. As I sat down and said hello and she said 'Hi", the conversation that followed grew.

She said she came up here to 'ring the bell' for SA during the winter. After that season was over she would head back to Florida to her family and spend the remaining part of the year living off her earnings. She said she had done this for over 14 years.

It's cold and hard standing on your feet until your relief arrives but she seemed happy. Good for her!

We always used to put money in the kettle bot no more. If the Salvation Army can pay Jim Norman in Tampa 95000 a year for part time work ,They don't need the little that we used to give. The people that stand out in all weather and donate there time are the best of people ,But when the SA pays a crook like Jim Norman 95000 out of donated money I am not going to feed that man. No way. Don't believe it ?/ Check it out it's in the Tampa Fl news history. I think it was 4 or 5 years ago. Norman was a Hillsboro County Commissioner. Not a nice man.

Old Scovy- The person ringing the bell that I talked with was paid a pretty good hourly wage. She was not a volunteer.

Takes a pretty good head to manage that type of operation. People with those skills are not found on every corner. You pay the going rate or you get people that can not manage that large of an operation.

Sorry I just thought they were all volunteers. Some people in the park where I live donate there time. I never heard of any one getting paid. I still think that if the SA can pay Jim Norman 95000 a year for part time work ,They don't need the little that I used to donate. Sorry

Sorry I sure didn't know that. Sounds like good pay for a short time that they ring the bells. Thanks for the information. ..Jack

Old Scovy- No need for you to say 'Sorry'. Maybe those people in your park were not really telling you the truth about their income?

Did you read the link I posted in another post about 'SA Bell Ringers' pay?

Now, let's do the REAL math. The 'ringers' are listed as making $14,000 per year. They usually work from Thanksgiving thru Christmas...30 days-more or less. They work 8 hour shifts with 15 minute breaks after 2 hours and a 30 minute break for lunch. And two days off per week.

Anyway, 40 hours per week X four weeks equals 160 hours of work. (I don't see 'bell ringers out any other time of year so, it must only pertain to this time frame.) Now, $14,000/year divided by 160 hours of work equals $87.50 per hour.

I AM SURE TO GUESS THAT THE RINGER DON'T EARN THAT KIND OF HOURLY RATE. But the numbers really don't add up.

Maybe, someone else can explain the numbers to me.......

Here is one article about Jim Norman.
SA is mentioned 3 times.

I feel cheated as I use to ring the bell for the SA and only got a Thank You and a small bell to keep. I was grateful for the opportunity to do it. After all the SA is a church, that hold services in a host of different towns across the country. I have attended services in Illinois and also a wedding done there by the Commander. I was really surprised at the job well done. So I'll keep dropping in a few coins to hopefully help out.

We give to the Salvation Army every time we go in a store. We give with a good heart and a cheerful attitude. What happens to it after we put it in the kettle we can't control. We do our part to help.

Just my thoughts.......

You could always give a couple of bucks to the local church of your choice, or to another LOCAL worthwhile cause.

NOT sure when it became "PC" to skip over the local causes and throw $$$ at a national "charity".

This time of year, I donate to my little sal i vation army. I go to the Feed Store and buy a couple of large bags of 4-Way (Corn, Oats, Barley, & Molasses) , and put it out (not all at once) for my little army of salivators (critters - birds, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, etc.) . This time of year, food is scarce for them and they have to eat too.

I don't have problem with SA but hate trying to go into a store and have to go through fleece the flock. Ringing bells, raffle tickets, petitions etc.

I can tell you thin much. Around the 9/11 site in the aftermath back in 2001, the SA was there handing out free food, drinks, etc to rescue workers, cops, people on the street, whoever needed help. I was there, I saw it first hand. The Red Cross would only let certain folks in their tents. I forget the specifics on RC, but it turned me off to them completely.

I always like to throw a little money in if you look at the collection jars that are around for various charitable organization or people in need there's cash out there. I also found out if you really want to see a smile what I give is fresh meat just after I butcher there's a lot of people just getting buy and give them a bundle with steak in it that really makes someone's day. Last year I found an older couple worked hard all there life and not had the best of luck and he had to have surgery I gave them a bundle just before his surgery a small thing to me but he was a happy camper .

I read thru the job listings, it's basically a minimum wage job. Nobody is making $14K for 30 days work. If you had the job for a entire year. It would come out to $14K. +/- , depending on the local minimum wage rate.

I give to the Salvation Army. No interest in here in supporting some preacher, so they can get rich. If it were up to me, I'd tax all these churches, if the have enough money to buy jets and build " campus" facilities, complete with coffee bars and health clubs, they can afford to pay taxes.

The kids don't carry money now a day's so it's got to hurt donations some. I still do and I drop some in when I walk by.

The more I read here about the Salvation army, the more I am confused. Do they get paid, do they volunteer and no pay. I don't know but I do know I will not give the red cross a dime. When I was totally broke a couple days before Christmas in 1957 while in the Army, I tried to borrow twenty bucks from Red Cross until pay day. Nope, I had been fully paid last pay day. No mix up or short pay. Thing is I had to move to a different trailer park, cost a few extra dollars so we were broke. The only one eating good was the baby but wife could not keep up the flow very long without food. My friend happened to stop by. He had seven dollars. Loaned me half . He had a charge account at gas station, filled the car as I had walked to church because gauge was on empty and for food, macaroni lasts for quite a few days. Paid him back and we made it, no red cross.

A friend of mine donated a 100 dollar bill to the salvation army. I think that was a waste of a 100 dollar bill.
