Question about things not in style these days

The previous post on cursive writing got me thinking. What things are not in style anymore (or an old mans thing) Comes to mind pocket watch, leggings, cb radio, suspenders, wool plaid cloathes. I realize it probably varies by region of the country.

If you are talking about leggings in terms of women's tights I saw quite a few wearing them now. Maybe more a few years ago they were out of style. As to the topic I don't see guys wearing Carhartt everything like they did a few years ago. Too bad as I am thinking about some pants and a jacket.

How about adult music being sung by someone who actually has a good voice, that stays on the melody, without breaking into falsetto, at a reasonable tempo, without having the instrumental background music so loud you can't understand the vocalist.

I have a CD in my truck that has the crooners from the 1950's / 1960's singing the outstanding ballads of the day. If I listen to any music, it's probably going to be that CD.

The older I get, the more I realize that just because something is new - it ain't always better......

Polk-dot hankies!

My wife knows shorthand;when she takes a telephone message for me in shorthand-very bad.Multiplication tables for elementary students.Manners, respect for older people like us.

Cars with manually rolled-up windows that never fail, not motors that go bad. Add to that foot-operated dimmer switches, not those darned dimmers on a stem.

Men's brimmed felt hats. Back in the day no man considered himself dressed if he left the house without his hat.

I'm thinking of car bumpers that were real chrome and not paint over vinyl. Bumpers that could take a small hit without a 1500 dollar panel replacement and paint job. If they put all the payphones back tomorrow I would throw this cell phone in the garbage.

I still have a car with roll up windows and they are no fun when you have rotator cuff issues. I also have a truck with foot dimmers and my legs must have got shorter because I always wind up stomping all over the floor trying to find it when I need it.

Men who at least tried to act like gentlemen and women who tried to act like ladies.

Also, people dressing appropriately for the venue. T-shirt and shorts and shower shoes are inappropriate for court, weddings, graduations, and most other functions except a track meet.

A wide variety of farm machinery manufacturers and colors to choose from at more reasonable prices. Growing up on the farm without much to worry about.

Tom I agree with you. New musicians today have just as much musical potential as the Sinatras back in the old days. They just don't use it. The basic rules of music are just slaughtered today. A singer today will start with fairly good flow and organization but will soon degenerate into an unorganized screaming tirade.

Wool carpets that generated enough stiatic in the winter to put you on the floor if you walked on said carpet and touched metal.

Remember in the '50's suede leather jackets, watch fob chains (whether they were attached to a watch or not), gum rubber shoe soles, etc.? I couldn't afford any of that stuff so I didn't even try to get in fashion. Did finally get gum rubber shoes when I went to college, but the rubber was so flexible that I broke my big toe when I missed a step going up the stairs.

Never was much for following the crowd anyway, so didn't try to dress to the current fad.

And plastic bumpers started out to survive 5 mph bump without damage. I don't know that that ever actually worked.

Pocket knives in grade school.
Headlight switches you pull out.
Cuffs on your jeans.

I remember all the stuff mentioned and don't miss any of it. Those cars with the manual windows needed major engine work at less than 120,000 miles. Today it's over 200,000 on average. I love 100,000 K tune ups too. I prefer more modern music too. Guess that makes me the odd man out!

I do miss people being more considerate of others.

Cursive writing, lights in glove box and under hood, glove box and passenger door locks - a few that cone to mind. Patriotism, respect and pride in our country also.

My buddy's dad buys a new truck and drives it 25 years. He is on his second. He SPECIAL ORDERS a 6 cylinder chevy,2wd, and manual trans. I think he gets a 2500 but not positive on that. Last one he got was an 07

Ladies. I miss ladies, the ones I grew up around. They never smoked in public if they smoked, they never swore, they wore gloves and heels to shop in and they never, ever were anything but ladies and were treated as such. They were kind, they knew when and how to straighten out a couple of kids that were getting a bit too rambunctious without resorting to screaming across the county and using language that would make a sailor blush. They taught Sunday school, they served on all the local boards and functions and they were the backbone of the community. Their husbands tended to be cut from the same cloth. I miss those types of people, solid citizens so to speak. It seems we had so many back in the day, all WW1 and 2 and Korea vets and their wives. The folks that lived through the depression and the war. Sad we don't seem to breeding them anymore.

Throttle and choke knobs on the dash. Vacuum wipers. Add-on turn signals. AC units that hung under the dash. Full size spares. Look under the hood and see the ground on both sides of the engine. Oil bath air cleaners.

This is [u:4212a94d5e]precisely[/u:4212a94d5e] why you all have to watch this video of Lady Gaga performing a tribute to Julie Andrews. She has an amazing voice, but unfortunately, that doesn't sell as many records (sidenote-records don't exist, neither do 8 tracks, cassettes, and now CDs are vanishing-sidenote) as when she wears a costume made completely out of deli meats and sings some freaky off key "song." (assuming you want to use the word "song" loosely.)

You have to watch the video.

What about cars with real spare tires, and tires that you could actually find, and get out. Jacks that will actually work with out reading the directions. Cars with roof rain gutters are not in style anymore. stan

I bought a pair of blue swede boots in the early seventies. They didn't fit right but they were the style and that is what was important to me at that time. Ten years later Marilyn told me I will never wear them in public again so they went to Good Will.

Hey Stan, I think those were called "drip rails". My '66 mustang has them.

How about back when someone could sing the National Anthem without having to do some weird strange "adaptation" of the song.

I was in a record store the other day and the whole front of the store was newly recorded records. Vinyl is making a big comeback and turntable sales are up too.

John I didn't realize Lady Gaga was capable of singing like that. All I can say is WOW! I have tears in my eyes.

Morning devotional prayer in public school.

Pledge of allegiance to the U.S. flag.

Earning your milk money.

Earning your lunch money.

Reading, writing, and arithmetic the way your parents learned.

Prayer in the field house before a game.

Knowing all the words of the Star Spangled Banner.

Singing the Star Spangled Banner correctly instead of like an old, Negro spiritual.

Prayer on the field before the game.

Prayer on the field after the game.

Performance awards for only first, second, and third place.

Getting "paddled" in class, getting "paddled" in athletics, getting "paddled" in the principal's office, then getting "whipped" with a belt when you got home.

Grades on tests were not "curved".

Memorizing the Gettysburg address.

Memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution.

Memorizing the Bill of Rights.

Church all day on Sunday with no football TV.

No football because of no TV.

Figure I'd better stop before I get more depressed.

Polyester leisure suits, and polyester shirts and slacks, wildroot cream oil for the hair, and curb finder springs on your car. I miss rain gutters on trucks, and front door wing vents.

James Howell -- I wish several million people in every state would read your list 30 seconds before they step into the voting booth next November.

Non-homogenized milk where cream rises to the top, strike anywhere matches, white walled tires, soap on a string, three speed on the column, head lights dimmer on the floor, used tires wrapped in colored foil at a gas station for advertising.

With almost everyone carrying either a cell phone or a smart phone, are watches of any kind still in style?

And they would still vote for the party that likes to hand out welfare! Those votes are bought and paid for!

Steering knobs, heat housers, add on wide fronts, add on cabs, add on 3 point hitches etc. Some are still used and available but think of what used to be a new novelty item on a tractor.

Really!?!! I'm going to have to look into that. To my ear, vinyl just sounds better, assuming the record is clear and everything in good shape. CDs I can handle but as with a book instead of a Kindle, something just feel "right".

James Howell, ditto. Add to that walking along greeting or respecting others vs. walking with your head down looking at your iPod (or whatever gizmo they have now) and risking falling into an open manhole.

Forgot to add:

Thinking about CHRISTMAS.

Saying the word CHRISTMAS.

Wishing someone Merry CHRISTMAS.

Singing songs with the word CHRISTMAS.

Seeing the entire word CHRISTMAS.

Finding a greeting card with the word CHRISTMAS.

Writing the word CHRISTMAS on a greeting card.

Displaying a CHRISTMAS sign or nativity scene on privately owned property.

Reading the original CHRISTMAS story to children.

Celebrating CHRISTMAS without offending someone.

Celebrating CHRISTMAS without fear of persecution or violence.

Giving/receiving a gun for CHRISTMAS, but that might be more in style these days.

Better stop now before loosing the CHRISTMAS spirit.

.

Which one? The original that did not mention the United States of America or God, the amended one that mentions the USofA but not God or the final one that some people find offensive that has "under God" in it?

Personally if we went back to the one without "under God" in it they could say the pledge every morning in school without a problem.

James I fully agree we live in a nation that was founded on Christianity but Christians are getting harder to find here . We should all be grateful that we live here and can worship anywhere we please but that isn't the case anymore. God bless.

The problem I find with this is that not all Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, but still call themselves Christians. I'm not aiming this at anyone here, just saying.

(quoted from post at 01:04:55 12/14/15)

Maybe "longjohns" with a trap door.

I bought a couple of union suits that had a slit in the back instead of the broad fall rear, or trap door as some people call them. I'd much rather have the trap door type. My wife borrowed a set from me during some really cold weather. She was quit the site in them.
