LP Regulators

Several posts down they talk about replacing LP regulators every seven years. Why is this done? My high pressure regulator is at least 50 years old and the low pressure at least 20. What is the danger? thanks in advance- DaveK

Besides other possible failures, LP regulators contain a rubberized fabric diaphragm that can fail with age causing a leak and possible lack of control.

Looks like some manufacturers want them replaced after fifteen years, there might be codes in your jurisdiction that require replacement SOONER, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask your insurance Co. what they require BEFORE something happens and they refuse to pay based on an out-dated regulator.

Check out the link below and see what a major regulator mfg. says about reading their date codes and when to replace.

Had the one on our tank start leaking out of the blue last summer. [15 year old]
I imagine over time like anything else they could be more prone to leak.
Not to say it doesn't exist somewhere but I have never read a regulation to this effect.

Depending on mfg. recommendations it can be from 15 to 25 years. Everything wears out over time. Worst case you would have high pressure coming into your house. More than likely you would just have appliance problems. A coworker went to a customer last week that had changed most of their appliances out twice in the last three years before a heat and air tech. found too high of inlet pressure at the furnace. Replacing the regulator would have been a bargain.

What is the danger?? House blowing up. Friends did, thank god they were not home. Thank goodness I was out of the lp business at the time. Furnace exploding inside the garage severely burning people, cats, dogs and anything else close by. These are actual happenings / good luck with those regulators.
