Fuel pump problems

Not really tractor related, but here goes anyway. I have an old Vermeer trencher with a 2 cylinder wisconsin engine and a mechanical pump. About a year and a half ago I was experiencing some fuel delivery problems. I decided to put a small electric pump on it. The pump puts out about 3 psi and is mounted below the level of the tank. The pump worked from the fall that I put it on until halfway through the next summer when it wouldn't pump right. Since I was in the middle of a job I just went and bought a new pump. We'll today that pump quit working. There cannot be 30 hours on both pumps. It is plumbed in with the correct the size line as per the instructions, has a good ground, and is mounted securely. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Don't recall the brand, however they were identical pumps from 2 different chain auto stores. Is there a chance that I'm not using enough fuel, and that is burning them out?

"Well today that pump quit working."

Does it still "run'/pulse/click/hum or is it completely dead.

"Is there a chance that I'm not using enough fuel, and that is burning them out?"

IMHO, not if they are in fact low-pressure pumps designed for use in a carbureted system

Do you have a screen ahead of the electric fuel pump to keep debris out as most mfg. of those pumps require?

What brand of pump are you using? I have had the best luck with the square FACET units. NAPA is one source.

Also, I recently dealt with a truck we thought multiple electric fuel pumps had failed, and it turned out to be a plastic "Caplug" that had inadvertently got into the tank was intermittently floating around and blocking the tank outlet.

friend had a mm g1000 once that used to go through electric fuel pumps like that, finally figured out the charging system was way overcharging, fixed that and then it was fine.I guess thats an easy check anyway, see how many volts its putting out when running.

I use an electric pump on my M38a1 Jeep. Went through two of the $14.95 ones from Auto Zone. Finally went to NAPA, got a better quality pump at about $40, installed it with an in-line filter ahead of it, no problems since.

It is a Mr Gasket pump, probably cheap. It has a supplied built in filter on it. The first one kept losing the ability to pump so I would pressurize the tank by blowing in it, it finally quit and just clicks. The second one started acting the same and I found the seam on the supplied filter was leaking and it was sucking air. I rigged it up to get by and now it quit too and just clicks.

Nothing to add, just a question. What type of pump are these. Are they a motor with a vane pump or something else. Someone asked about a click, etc, which makes me wonder?
Thanks, Roy

if the pump will work ok when no outlet line is hooked to it, also check to see if the fuel line bends up higher than the carb, then angles down to the carb. had a pump intermittently quit like that, turned out that the high point would occasionally "collect" all the small air bubbles dissolved in the gas and the jiggling would then cause the bubbles to join to form one big bubble at that high point. the pump wasn't powerful enough to pump past that bubble. a form of vapor lock, I guess, but it would do it in any weather. re-bent the fuel line to get rid of that high spot & all was good. heck of a time figuring that one out.

A Facit pump is a solenoid based oscillating pump with a intake and exhaust check valve. It is controlled by a single transistor, and has no rotating motor. Jim

I was in a bind with the grain truck and put on an electrical pump. The only place open that night was an auto zone. I bought the best one they had with a year warranty. I replaced that pump four times over the next three weeks while I waited on the new mechanical.

They weren't the old Facet style, although I have had one of those fail after just a few years.

Electric pumps are a rip off. Buy Facet. It's the best you can do in the circumstances.
