Propane Tank and Stove

We have a 100lb propane tank for our kitchen stove, tank belongs to Amerigas, only thing we use gas for.Just wife and I,stove is used very little.Gas company now wants $85. a year tank rental, plus the crazy high price we pay for the gas cause we use such a little amount.I told them to come get there tank, and I plan on buying using a 40 lb tank for our stove.Anyone else doing something similar to this?If figure once a year,I can haul the 40 lb. cyl. down to the hardware store and get it filled.

bought my own 500 gal. tanks 15 yrs. ago and never looked back....i buy from whomever is cheapest

That sounds like a good plan to me. Only thing I might do different would be to get two 20# tanks. Run one until empty, have a spare waiting, easier to handle.

Sounds like the propane company is trying to get you off their route. You should oblige them. You may find a 20# tank handles your stove just fine.

With 2 20lb cylinders to fuel that stove you might want to consider a dual regulator like the one below. It draws from one tank until it is empty, then automatically switches to the other tank so your stove doesn't quit. Then you can turn the valve and remove the empty one for refilling or just to swap out for another full one.

Had the same problem. Gas company wanted a extra $100/year because of my cook stove only low usage. Purchased my own tank and told them to come and pump my propane into my tank and take their tank back. That was two years ago and their tank is still here and I did not pay the $100.

I was at the dump a few years ago and someone dumped off 3 100lb. tanks. I took them home and exchanged the empty ones for full,no ? asked and no contract.

I have used a propane stove for 20+ years (just bought a new one). We get by on 2 -20# bottles and a dual bottle regulator. Just replaced the regulator and hoses 'just because'. We are now using the hoses with the hand type (RH thread) ends (same as BBQ). 1 bottle lasts between 7 - 10 weeks. HTH

I think the problem is large companys are buying out the smaller propane companys. All these large outfits care about is the bottom line as in big $$$$$$$$$. Same as the local car dealers/ tractor dealers/mom & pop stores/on and on and on.We are forced to buy from the mega stores. joe

I just got a bill for tank rental (500 gallon)from Amerigas and they want $201.00 yearly tank rental. I will be getting on phone see what is going on I have never paid tank rental. You can buy a refurbished 500 gallon tank for $800.00. My tank is 44 years old and they don't take care of their tanks.

I have 4 20 lb jugs . They last 2-3 months on the stove , always have one on the grill too. Get them filled for 10 bucks a pop at local feed store . I just throw the empties in the truck when headed to town .

As RM-MN said, consider using a dual regulator with two tanks. The regulator automatically switches from an empty tank to the full tank, you can replace the empty tank at your leisure. It beats having to change tanks on a cold winter night.

I spent 15 years in the lp gas business, as I have stated in all other posts about lp gas, NEVER rent a tank from anyone. You will get burned, maybe not this year, but it will happen. Remember, most of the 100 lp tanks are owned by some company. You may be able to buy one from a defunct company, but if you buy a used 1 private, the owner may come looking for it. They all have serial numbers on them and most company's can prove ownership. If you buy a dual regulator or for that matter any regulator, I think pampflet 58 states they must be replaced every so many years at great expense to you. Ask any independent propane supplier or farm Coop that sells lp gas. Most will have a propane specialist to assist you.

We're lucky we have great propane company. I have my own 500 gal tank and they maintain the regulator and have replaced the gauge for me at no charge. I had another tank but move it to a farm I bought and sold the house. Nothing but grief with that propane company. They came and go the tank after the auction when I bought it then tried to claim my tank. Mine came from an oil producer that used to move them around lease to lease when gas ran out but they finally got all their leases onto electric.

Buy your own tank regardless of the size you need. Renting tanks leaves you at the mercy of the company that owned the tank. I would get TWO tanks and a double regulator like other have posted. I own 6 100 lbs. tanks. Lowes and Home Depot have them for right at $135-140. The dual regulator setup I bought form my local supplier and it was around $50. I just looked on line and several places had them for under $60 plus lines.

If you only need 40 lbs. tanks then check with an RV retailer in your area. They will have what you need as most smaller RVs use the forty LBS. tanks and the dual regulator setup.

I never did rent the tank, they just supplied it for the past 35 years.Did pay an outrageous price for the gas,and I was ok with that, cause we only needed some every 2 years, that's how little I use, with kids gone and wife and I working.
Reminds me of the saying, you can shear a sheep many times, but skin it only once.
Well I was ok with the shearing, but they can have the tank back before I get skinned.

I have 2 40# bottles on my travel trailer. This year it was fairly warm for hunting season. Did all my heating and cooking for 8 days on less than one bottle. Last year it was really cold (pict.) and one bottle last 6 1/2 days. For an occasional stove, I think 40# would last a long time. If you have a gas grill, you could use that as a backup when your 40 runs out. RVs also usually have a splitter valve that automatically changes tanks when on runs out if you went with 2 40s.
