Using brush auger for fertilizer

Bought a gravity wagon with a brush auger on it. Wasnt exactly what I was looking for but price was right. Can I use it for starter fertilzer
with out wrecking it? Is there a "best practice" for cleaning after use if I did use for fertlizer. I can use if for small grain drill
filling, and maybe I could switch from bagged soybean seed to bulk and use it for filling planted, but dry starter is what I mainly needed.
My 30+ year, used and abused one had its last season last year, tube was thin, flighting starting to break, so its going to scrap. Any advice
out there?

Dave,I would not use it for fert. Would think it be very hard on brushes and fert will get in places you can't get out. Oil it good when done. Rick

Take it apart and make a steel auger for it....welding shop, or Midway Iron in east St. Cloud should have flighting and center pipe. I have a stainless auger from fertilizer plant- might be 5 inch tho- that would last for eons. Would sell cheap.

I have never tried it, but don't imagine it will work well. My fert. auger is SS in a PVC tube, by Unverferth. I used to use a poly/section auger on the hex SS center tube, and that worked fine. I would think obtaining one or the other of these would serve you a lot better in fert.

Although I wouldn't suggest it, I ran many many tons of ice melt through a brush auger. Just wore the bristles down, but it lasted 4-5 years I believe.

I take my steel fertilizer auger apart and pressure wash it then oil and reassemble it. If you don't take it apart there is no way to get all the fertilizer out and it won't last long. Best auger for fertilizer would be stainless auger with plastic tube, would last forever. I think the abrasive action of fertilizer would rapidly tear the brush off a brush auger but you can try it and if it doesn't work have a steel auger made.

I would think plastic auger flighting with a stainless core inside a PVC tube would be the cat's meow for fertilizer. Lindell plastics in Odebolt Iowa makes plastic flighting for about anything and they are reasonable on price. I re-flighted my seed auger with a plastic flighting from them for $353.40. The auger has a steel tube but I do have another seed auger that someone made using PVC and steel flighting. It will be getting plastic flighting too but I do know PVC does work for the tube.
