handleing fertilizer

Thanks for the replies about the methods.
We have 2 wagons for seed with augers on them. Neither one is big enough for the tonnage I need to put in them. I didn't want to rust out good boxes with fertilizer. Also was thinking a truck box would hold more and with a hoist I could use it to run the auger on the truck box. The auger on the planter runs off the tractor on the planter.
This would also be used for Urea in the spring to top dress wheat and potash in the fall or spring as well as planting in the spring.
Our planter puts the fertilizer at about a 2x2 strip next to the seed. We use about 200 pounds to the acre in the row on corn. With about 100-150 of N preplant.
Again thanks for the replies.

It helps to run diesel fuel into the gravity box after using them for fertilizer. Also run the auger at that time. I like rrlund"s idea about putting a tarp inside the box to minimize contact. Boxes don"t rust instantly, anymore than CaCl rusting a rim instantly. I used mine many years before there were problems, and a re-skinning took care of that. (No comment about what to do with the fertilizer flushed with diesel fuel)

I kind of liked the idea of having the box blasted then putting the bedliner coating in it. Hadn't thought of that before. I 'll bet that would seal up a lot of places for the fertilizer to get into. Probably pretty pricey though.
I would guess if you let the fuel oil soak in before hand it would not be much to deal with, maybe not more than a shovel full.
