Early David Brown 990

Some of you Case or British guys might know. On a DB990 with the batteries back between the seat and fenders, did those have British Standard Fine bolts and nuts or were they SAE standard thread? Was there a serial number split where they would have one or the other?

There were still some BSF threads on the last DB built in 1988, along with metric and SAE.

I can't help you on which threads, just tell you there will be at least some BSW and BSF.

My 1957 900 is all BSW and BSF. Any bolts I have needed, I had to single point on a lathe.

My 61 850 (Oliver 500) seems to be all BSF. I had the fuel tank off and when I went to put it back on,I couldn't find the nut for the strap. Nothing else would fit. I got real lucky and found it on the floor near a tire after some intense searching. Even little things like that can be a big problem.

Randy, there are 2 David Browns at Ashley Salvage. I don't know what models they are. They are both white, one days David Brown with Case underneath. Maybe some bolts on them if you need some?

Maybe I need to take a run over there. I wonder if either one has the battery box by the seat and decent fenders? I don't know what the hold up is with the guy who's supposed to be fixing mine. I didn't take him much to work with though.

They looked like "decent" tractors, for what little I know about DB's and what little I looked them over. I was more interested in the engines, I'm always scheming to put a diesel engine in something where it doesn't belong. I do remember thinking That the one had nice looking fenders. I may be heading over there this weekend to get some more parts, if I do, I'll take some pictures and check em out

Ya,I wondered about the 990 DB though. I found one with the batteries back by the seat like the Oliver 600s had. The hood and grille are rounded like the 600,only think that doesn't look Oliver is that it doesn't have the grille insert. The wheels started turning about getting a serial tag made and making my own 600.

OK,if we get a day without fog or rain this week,I might head over there myself and take a look. I'll let you know if I go.
They're the first road back east of the county line on 57 then north aren't they?

Yep, go past Woodbridge on 57 to the next road, its Maywood on the north side and Mason on the south side. Head north on Maywood, maybe 2 miles, Cotter Rd right. The tractors are on the right side of the yard as you head in, near the back. As I said, know nothing about David Brown tractors, have no idea what models they are, so I hate to have them be something totally not what you are looking for.

Hi Randy, they had both BSF and UNF and UNC so you will need Whitwoth spanners as well as your AF spanners.
Batteries both sides of the seat was fitted on the first 990 Implematic tractors from early 1962 to mid 1963 and I have a 1962 model. Good luck. MJ

Have you ever seen one of those early ones with Case decals? This one is painted orange and white with Case decals. I thought those early ones were red and yellow? This one was repainted maybe?

Yes they were red and yellow till 1965, they were the tractors with the Implematic hydraulic system. In 1964 Ford sacked a lot of their dealers and appointer distributors ready for the 6X range coming out. This left a lot of dealers without a tractor to sell so David Brown filled the gap and discontinued their agreement with Oliver. The reason DB painted the selectomatic tractors brown and white was the ex Ford dealers also sold the Bolens small tractors and they wanted the DB tractors the same colour. MJ

MJ, here we got 990s with the new tin and colors but the implematic hydraulics till at least 1967.

(quoted from post at 22:19:15 12/07/15) There is a serial number break for those bolts. All of the gas jobs have British threads if I remember right.

My 900 diesel is all Whitworth. Not a single UNC or UNF unless I put it there.

I went to call the guy about that one this morning and it's been sold. Darned shame too,the price wasn't bad and it even had the draft sensing center link on it for the three point.

I went over there this morning. One was a 1210,totally different tractor. The other,I think was a 990,but it was a little later and had the batteries in front of the radiator. That meant there was no cross box. Those fenders weren't rusted out,but they were pretty beat up. I don't know if they could have been remade to fit or not. I thought before I resorted to that I'd email Peter at David Brown Parts Ltd and see if he could get everything new for me. If not,I'll go get one of my old fenders and take that back over and see how similar they are.
I stopped at the body shop before I went,to see if they had made any progress. He said he didn't think they were even repairable. It would almost be a matter of making them from scratch. I told him to just go ahead and finish up the hood and grille and I'd see what I could do to find some fenders.
Thanks for the lead on those. Like I said,I might have to make them work.
