Just talked to a buddy of mine. He was telling me
about a Farmall 400 that came from the factory
without a pto --- bareback. I have never heard of a
tractor that is this size without pto. Is this rare??

Could it be a W(wheatland)400? They were more common to be PTO delete.Believe it or not,PTOs,and TAs were optional equipment on both rowcrop(Farmall) and wheatland models.PTO delete is rare on Farmall models,IMHO,more common on the wheatrland modles.

I have seen that before. I have a PTO delete SMTA in the back yard and have seen several 400/450 with standard PTO. Either somebody ordered it that way or it was intended for another application such as cotton picker. Definately rare to find one with PTO delete.

There are a few guys from many years ago that I could imagine ordering a Farmall 400 with whatever deletes they could from the factory. I think somebody here said that you could get T/A and hydraulics deletes also. If they ran their previous tractor without those features they may not see the need for those features and save a few dollars. I have a 1971 JD price book and it shows prices for no remote hydraulics, 3pt hitch, or PTO shaft for the 4020.

At Farmamerica we have a Minneapolis Moline U without a PTO.

My John Deere 50 was ordered without live PTO. It has the standard one like the A's and B's. I assume the original buyer did not want to spend the extra money for live PTO.
