OT:What kind of gift for elderly man?

My folks are now at an Assisted Living place and they staff is throwing a Christmas party with gift exchange. I need to supply a $15 gift for a man. Now, keep in mind this is "assisted" not "nursing" so the men aren't totally infirm. Heck, one guy still drives. But I don't know what their backgrounds are or interests or even sizes. So a farm themed gift like my dad might like is out. I thought maybe an outdoor wall art of some kind like a wildlife scene. Food is not good due to dietary issues. Any general ideas?

This can be a hard one.

Think about a gift card to a local restaurant, a gift card to a local movie theater or something similar to get them out and about.

I guess I left out the detail that while all are free to come and go, some aren't able to anymore.

Maybe audio books would be a good gift. There are a lot of Louis L'Amour audio books on eBay. Most of them are cassette some are CD. L' Amour even did a few audio dramatizations that run about an hour. These were done much like old time radio dramas with sound effects, and multiple actors.

I like your thinking, and since he still has a drivers license and a car... Keep me in mind in a few years when you're looking for someone to make smile.

Did you know that a small thing is still a big thing to get. OKay like a key ring chain (you know that might have ford, chevy, or some car name on it). A little flash light that might fit in there pocket so they can turn it on to see keys in the dark. Night light like at home depot that plug in to the socket that trun on when it gets dark at night. Some thing that can help them out. Here one more ideal how about a solar light for the outside on there little area they have to set down in and enjoy.

You know I think Mr. Zappe is onto something. A small - not too small to keep track of or grip - but powerful LED flashlight might be a really good thing for them to have.

I have a 92 year old friend that looks forward every Christmas to Marks calendar. He grew up on a farm but was a crane operator till his retirement. Many people have some connection to the farm and who wouldn't appreciate that calendar.

I would think that 15 one dollar bills cleverly wrapped would be a great gift to someone that you would not know their life style.

A gift certificate at a large clothing store is something most people can use. A wallet, nuts, or cheese are other ideas.

My older cousin lost most of his sight, so he couldn't read books. I told him about the audio books by Louis L'Amour; he had never read one of his books. His daughter bought up a whole bunch of audio books - and he really liked listening to Louis do the reading. He's in a nursing home now and still listening to audio books.

I really enjoy audio books even though I don't have trouble reading. Another good author is Larry McMurtry. He was the author of Lonesome Dove. His books are always interesting. Another thing that might be a good gift for a older person is CD's, or cassettes of old time radio dramas like Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Fiber McGee and Molly, the list goes on and on.

hard question.. when my gma was in one of those.. both males and females liked puzzles.
nature puzzles with med size pieces..

Please take this a joke. Zantac, Centrum silver, poly-grip, preparation H, and depends all come to mind.

Don't know of any "old man" that wouldn't appreciate a pocket knife of a few enhancement pills.

A Zapper, a friend got my Dad a zapper. It looks like a tennis racket, you swat bugs with it and it shocks them like the older bug lights. Myself, I don't see the enjoyment in hearing the crackle, but my Dad gets a kick out of it.

Or a bird house that mounts on the window with stoppers and has a "see through" back. You can watch the birds build a nest from inside the house. It has mirror type coating so the birds do not see you. I got my Dad one last year at end of spring, he said too late to put up so he will try it this spring. So can't say how good it is.
Both items are under $15.00 limit.

Or get one of the old Birds that continue to bob up and down "drinking" water from a glass. I just got one a month ago, my kids and grandkids had never seen one. I think it is Cool in this time and age of all elector, remote control things. This bird does not use battery or solar, just keep his beak wet and he keeps going. Sure to bring back memories at the home.
I am getting all the kids one for Christmas this year!

What about a throw? They could use it on their bed or while sitting in a chair. I'm getting up in years and it seems like I'm always cool in the house.

A reacher...extends your arm 20 inches, pick things up off the floor.
also a longhandled shoe horn.
A button tool to help button his shirt.

All available on Amazon.

A couple more ideas.

Skylink remote control switch...turn lights or radio off across the room.

Touch control or clap control for a lamp or for a radio.

Electronic solitare game...no need to shuffle and deal....old hands don't do that very well.
