Where the cv shaft comes out of the trans is really loose like I can move it up and down an inch, I thought I had a wheel bearing going bad but seems the noise is in the trans, it is not leaking oil! Anyone have some points on this, mother in law was here a couple months ago and cleaned out my files, now I can't locate my repair manual! Note, Passenger side if that makes a difference! Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the axle is pushed all the way in to the transmission? There is a detent ring that holds axle in place....kinda like a socket on an impact wrench. The splines will still engage without being pushed all the way in.

I didn't check it by pushing and or pulling on it for some reason! Must have a bearing out in the transmission, cause I started the car in neutral and it sounded like there was a space heater roaring under the hood! I am going to call a transmission shop in the morning! Thanks

A loose bushing where the CV shaft plugs in would not by itself cause noise with the car standing still because all those lower transmission parts would be stationary.

Stop! You do not have a trans problem. The trans in that car uses a 6 inch stub shaft to connect the final drive to the Cv joint on the right side. The design is inherently sloppy and does not cause a problem as long as it is not leaking. If it makes the noise running in neutral, you have a waterpump, idler, alternator, or power steering problem. The 4T40/45E trans in your Alero is probably the best front drive transmission GM, or anyone, ever made.
