A friend looked at a pickup with a 7.3 in it and auto transmission. the transmission is low on oil and no visible leaks, where can the oil be going. It is either 2001 or 2002. Thank You.

If it is 4x4, check the transfer case fluid for being over full. The front T-case seal can fail and allow trans fluid to be pushed into the transfer case.

Cooler line, seepage from oil pan, oil cooler in radiator leaking into coolant. There are many places for the oil to go. For the time being, I would top it off and keep watch on it. Check the fluid in the transfer case for being overfull, check the radiator for signs of transmission fluid in it, look for external cooler leaks, and look over the cooler lines carefully.

Apparently they will puke fluid if you are backing up a heavy trailer in high range, but not leak any other time or show leakage.

They will leak out the front seal if very hot pulling a heavy load. Add a bigger transmission cooler will take care of it.
