How not to hunt

Been seeing a few green license plates turn around here lately, one asked to hunt during archery, politely... but this one takes the cake... Shortage of deer in VT maybe ? This will cost him quite a bit when said and done.

Out here in MI I passed a guy on the interstate who had pulled over to hack the head off a huge 10 pointer road kill (probably going to have it mounted and claim he shot it). That, of course, wasn't as bad as the guy who was arrested out here some years back who got caught along side the road having "intimate relations" (for lack of a more appropriate term) with a road kill deer. I can't imagine what the charge would be. After all, the thing wasn't alive and he wasn't the one who killed it. It may have even been in daylight so it could have been a...wait for it... "not tonight deer".

Vermont is not the state it was 40 years ago when it was all farmers, miners and loggers. Now it's pretty much full of transplants from NYC, Mass, Ct and Jersey. Sad.

WE had 2 guys here on opening day who got caught. Charges included "interfering with a law enforcement officer, hunting without a license, illegal position of game animals and criminal trespass". The land owner who was not hunting but wearing orange working in his yard heard shots and had bullets passing not far from him. Because his land is posted he called the game hotline. Conservation officer (here in MN also a sworn police officer) responded and found 2 guys, no licenses, with 3 deer in possession while trespassing. The carp cop had called for backup and a state patrol officer was also there. One of the guys got belligerent with the officers. In MN trespassing while committing another crime automatically makes it criminal trespass. Their pickup and guns were confiscated and it will be up to the judge if they get them back. There will at a minimum be heavy fines and they may actually spend some time behind bars. Last year the same carp cop responded to a report of a trespasser and while on the side of the road talking to the land owner had a guy stop on the road and shoot a deer from their truck right in front of the officer and land owner. That's pretty bold.

As far as the deer head goes? The guy could have found a dead deer and wanted the rack. Who knows? I saw a guy waste his tag on a half rotted deer he found because he wanted the rack. Many states have "wonton waste laws" that makes it illegal to waste the meat just for a trophy.

I really hate people like that as they do give hunters a bad name.

When I started as a deputy sheriff here in central Washington we would routinely pick up road kill deer and elk as long as we had a timeline on when it was killed, for food for prisoners. Later there were problems where someone in another jail got sick and was attributed to bad meat so we stopped doing that. Also we no longer had a butcher shop to process it. I think the game department still turns over illegal kills to missions. A person convicted of an illegal kill is charged for the cost of the animal according to game department. Guns are seized and generally at the end of proceedings a hunter can buy his rifle back from game dept at appraised fee.

What is ironic is that he was caught in an area that is a rural farming district (though not all that far from urban areas). The folks in that area are a rough crowd and there is no doubt they do not take kindly to outsiders hunting. I've seen what they can do first hand when a friend had 300 acres in the area. There is also no doubt many do the same kinds of things, the area has a reputation for things of this nature. Its no fun to hunt these areas for the most part, though a friend and his dad did well there this year, most will agree with the previous.

I believe they do seize everything involved with the crime here too, not sure if he can get any of it back though, as I recall the laws are tough on this kind of thing. I did not see he was charged with transporting a rifle or firearm across state lines, wonder of that applies here under federal law?

Like Bret said, there's also quite the influx of different people across the line now, so the population has changed character at least I am sure. All I know is I have seen lots of out of state plates on the state road that I reside off of, for 25 years at least now.

Google this guys name [Milo E. Tudor] . He is real scum who slashed his own fathers tires. Probaly has a long arrest record.

I had 6 different trespassers last week. I gave them a warning that next time, I call the DNR. Friday, 4 of the same ones pulled into a field, dropped 1 off and headed back down the road. Then they let out the others to drive deer out of the woods, with dogs. DNR was too busy to come out. Trespassers worked 4 woods from 8 acres to 35 acres just like they own all the world. They started at 9:00 am and did not leave the area until after dark.

Trespassing, deer hunting with dogs. all kinds of violations and DNR was too busy.

You would be surprised how mad they get when you set up a shot gun target shoot(straight up as fast as you can shoot).Any deer will leave quick.

You don't have real police where you live? State or County LEOs?

I would call the DNR, the State police and the County Sherriff and tell them there are several people trespassing on your land that are ARMED. Tell them you will wait 30 minutes for assistance and then ARM yourself and confront the trespassers. I guarantee you will get a response,,,,.
