What does "bareback" mean in these terms. I thought it meant without a cab, but I see one in a CL add that definitely has a cab. Thanke, Roy

No 3 point or other hitch system like the Fast Hitch or Snap Coupler. That's bareback.

Lot of the old Minneapolis Moline big tractors were "bareback"- just a hitch, no 3 point, no PTO- just to pull tillage equipment, the bigger the better.

Our 856 IH was a bareback - they called it a wheatland. It had two remotes and a swinging drawbar. Nothing else. It made it kind of a pain as we only had one other "big" tractor - a 966 that had pto and three point. It got used for lots of little jobs while the 856 was for disking, plowing, and planting. Only field work the 966 ever did was to cultivate sedan.

Of late it is important again, the big 4wd tillage tractors were often bare back, they only pull 50 foot wide tillage stuff.

But, now, with the big grain carts following combines around, the pto is needed again on the big fellas!

INdustrial tractors usually had a heavier frame and front axle, for a front end loader and or a back hoe.

They usually had special transmission options for a reverser or 3 forward and 2 reverse gears.. Some had shuttle transmissions or torque converters instead of clutches.

They could have additional hydraulic pumps to operate add on equipment, and many times could be delivered with out a 3 pt and a pto.

And in some cases were shipped as backhoes/ frontend loaders from the factory or as a naked industrial units for what ever the used wanted to do with it. Lots were modified to run trenchers, hyway construction equipment like sweepers or even snow plows.

Again heavy duty, higher capacity front axles, usually closer to ground and with special transmissions and extra hydraulics in most cases.
