Cure for the Common Cold.

I wish there was a cure for the common cold. I feel miserable. My wife started getting sick last week, and now it's my turn. It started with me during the windy days last week. I could feel the cold coming on and would have liked to stay in the house, but I couldn't. I did take the day off today to get rested up. Haven't been sleeping well for the past four or five nights, getting out of bed around 2:00 a.m. Tomorrow I'll have to go out to bring a weeks supply of coal to the house. Then I'm going to park myself near the heater for another day of rest.

Sounds like you need some of Granny Clampet's cold cure. Take a spoonful every day, drink plenty of fluids, get lots of rest and in a week to ten days, your cold will be gone.

You mean the opossum paralyzer Granny Moses used to make? I think I'll put up with the cold. I don't need a head ach. I do have a bottle of scotch hidden away. Maybe this is a good time to get it out.

I mix whiskey, honey and lemon in equal parts and slug that down. I don't know if it helps or not,but it makes having a cold a little more worthwhile.

My Dad used to feed that concoction to me when I was a kid. Probably more to shut me up than anything. I do remember sleeping pretty soundly on those nights.

I had an old neighbor who was a Navy medic. He was the one who told me about it. Best stuff I ever mixed up was made with some stuff we got in a brown jug in the Ozarks.

I heard that stuff will make you see pink elephants.

(quoted from post at 01:54:49 11/23/15) I didn't have any trouble getting the honey to dissolve in it. lol

Probably due to all the heat coming off that big pink elephant.

I came down with a very bad one yesterday. Extremely bad nasal congestion and fever. I picked up a ton of coal Friday but it is still on the back of my truck. I have a bag and a half to go before I have to bite the bullet and unload it. Wasn't able to sleep last night, I felt like I was being water boarded all night. Not even going to try tonight.

Marilyns dad used to give them hot whiskey and honey for a cold. Marilyn can't stand the smell of whiskey to this day.

I remember some years ago, Bayer had a commercial that said if you feel a cold coming on, "Drink plenty of liquid, get plenty of rest and take Bayer for relief." One day I felt like a cold was coming my way, so I decided to try it, I took the day off, made sure I had plenty of juice and such and stayed in bed. Believe it or not, I was able to fight it off. I believe that most of us run such a tight schedule that we constantly stay in a weakened condition, and our bodies have no reserve energy to combat colds, etc. I do remember one time I tried the cold remedy that came from the ABC store, Felt pretty good when I went to bed, but next morning I still had a cold. AND a hangover!

When you feel like that it's best to sit up during the night in an easy chair. You might doze off a few times and at least get that much sleep.

Get someone to help you with the coal. Being sick and dopey from lack of sleep only leads to accidents.

One of the best things I've found for the common cold is Vitamin C . Normally I take two of the 500 mg fruit flavored chewable Vitamin C tablets daily, and I
very rarely have a Cold or the Flu. But when I do feel a Cold or the Flu coming on, I take four of the 500 mg tablets every 8 hours for several days and I
usually don't get the Cold or Flu. Also, it's real hard to get too much Vitamin C , because the excess that the body doesn't need is excreted out through the
urine. And if you're a smoker, it's also beneficial because the Nicotinic Acid in the tobacco smoke robs the body of Vitamin C .

Very good advice. Vitamin C does help keep the immune system healthy. I need to stock up on a few item before this happens again.

It's funny. I worked as a janitor at our local state university for nearly thirty years, and cleaned up every liquid the human body could excrete. Most of us older janitors very seldom got sick. We figured that our immune system became stronger from all the stuff we had to deal with. I've been away from that job for about four years now, so now I suppose I'll be catch more colds from now on.

If you get a cold it will take about seven days to get rid of it. Or you can go to the doctor and get rid of it in a week. One way ia a lot cheaper.

The nasel saline flush via the squeeze bottle from Neil Med. flushes nasty stuff out , shrinks tissue so you can breath and the salt kills the virus and even sinus infections .

What do they call those little tea pot things used for rinsing out your sinuses? I can't stand getting water in my sinus cavities. It burns like heck. I busted my nose pretty good when I was a younger man. After I had it fixed up I could go swimming without the whole pool of water flooding into my sinuses, so now I stay out of the water.

Are you kidding me?

There's a MUCH better alternative to curing a cold: milk it for all it's worth.

Curl up in bed with a good book, do a lot of moaning and groaning whenever anybody's within earshot, and insist that you're so sick you can't move.

All your chores will either magically get done for you, or be there waiting for you when you get back to them.

It's easy to lose the sense of guilt because you'll even fool yourself into thinking you're just too sick to do anything... or you might be if you
tried moving.

It's like a 3 or 4 day mini-vacation.

Lots of good information given. I might add that I am lucky that I seldom have a cold.
I think the reason is that I wash my hands frequently and try to stay away from people having colds. I am not OCD just cautious!
Years ago, when I worked in a manufacturing plant, my doctor advised me to wash my hands, especially after shaking someone's hand, not that they are unclean, just a precaution.
He also said that there would never be a cure for the common cold for two main reasons---so many different strands and it would really upset retail trade for the medical field.

Never had any success with the tea pot . Squeeze bottle in one nostril and hold the other closed . Lean forward with your head down over the sink. You may feel the saline back to your ears, up into the tear ducts and up into the frontal sinuses .
Use the buffered packages of salt instead of table salt .
Not so bad with some practice. The benefits are worth the learning curve .

Keeping your hands away from you face helps prevent getting sick. I didn't practice this rule very well. I had a moustache I had a habit of pulling on. The moustache went into the toilet this morning when I shaved this morning. My wife finally gave in and went to the doctor this morning. She's prone to pneumonia and most likely have it again.

That would never work in my house. My wife has no interest in helping anyone when they are sick.

The honey, lemon juice and whiskey (So Co was specified in the Original Recipe we got), seems to be popular, but I can't attest to it's effectiveness. I finally got slow enough (overworked and over tired) that a cold caught up with me last week brought home from DsD's working with children) - first one that amounted to more than a sniffle in about 8 years. Been treating it with hot ginger tea with our own honey, some homeopathic remedies, and a little extra rest soaking up heat by the wood stove. And no, my chores are not really getting done as I rest and recuperate, they're accumulating.

There was another cure I sampled about 30 years ago, made by a nurse from a recipe she got from some elder, that contained garlic, olive oil, some other seeds and herbs (forgotten what all), and was kept in a fridge. She swore by it. It tasted so bad, you made yourself well just to avoid another dose. Sure could have used a spoonful of that a few days ago.

Sinus irrigation has had more effect on my health than anything else in my 66 years. I used to be sick with sinusitis 2-3 times a year. It would knock me right down for a month each time. Irrigation with the little squeeze bottles has reduced it to just one in four years. And forget the netti pot, throw it away. It takes too long to be realistic. The squeeze bottle is just five seconds for both nostrils.
