Good morning
Can you use a double acting cylinder as a single acting cylinder by just leaving the far end plugged??

NO Drill a little hole in the plug for a vent. Works best with a couple of elbows to point it down to keep moisture out.

They make factory vented plugs as well.

That is a yes and no thing. The end you want to plug has to have a vent plug in it not a real plug or it will air lock and cause problems. You can buy vent plugs or you can make one by taking a pipe plug and drilling a small hole in the end in such a way it works as a vent

Most hydraulic and farm supply stores will have a vented plug made for this, kinda has a hole filled with steel wool type of thing. You don't want an air lock with an actual plug, and you don't want a wide open hole with no plug.....
