3020 John Deere steering

This is a gas tractor. Upon startup steering goes from one lock to the other without touching steering wheel.
It performs normal after that. This probably should be on JD board but JD Seller and other will have the solution
on this site. Thanks for advice.

More than likely there's a leaking o-ring in the steering motor under the fuel tank. O-rings can be replaced by removing frt axle & one side frame. Support tractor very securely before removing frt axle

yep ,, sumthin aint rite , jd and others can help ,,. all I can do is help you guess , ,, my 4020 starts better if I crank hard on the steering while cranking in cold weather ,,. kinda has to do with pumping oil going thru the empty cycle and filling all the cavities ... your problem is the nature of the beast , you are luky that it behaves itself after start up .. ,gonna need a pressure guage to tell for sure ,1st thought is the steering wheel area ,, but wouldn't be surprised if its in the steering motor itself ,,. we took my 4020 down from the top down to get to the steering motor,,too much grease and grime on a hot day ,, I am told it can . can come out by pulling one of the side rails and leaving fuel tank and all in place ,,..

It sounds like your steer valve needs resealed and calibrated, I can do that here and bench test it to make sure it's right. Mail me if your interested in me doing it or helping you do it..they can be a bit tricky to do for a first timer..

That steering unit is not for the amateur or faint of heart. Can you say, over engineered. When they went to the simple little steering hand pump (what ever you want to call it) on later model tractors, I think a lot of Deere mechanics breathed a sigh of relief. I only got involved with Deere the last four year before retiring but did tangle with a couple of them.

The other fellows have it covered. You need to have the steering valve gone through and it is not something most can do themselves. You need to KNOW what your doing and even then you need some tooling that many do not have. Truthfully I send my own out any more. I get a warranty that way and it does not cost much more than parts an my time would anyway.
