Seems like I have a lot of battery problems. I have a lawn tractor and the 12V battery shows to have 12.57 volts. It will not crank engine over.
I know I need a new battery but thought 12.57 volts should start.
How many volts is usually capable of starting?

I had a battery TEST at 12 VOLTS but the specific Gravity was to LOW......Starter would not crank Engine. Yes you can have 12 VOLTS and still have a battery that has no CC AMPS.
I charged the battery until the LEAD ACID SOLUTION is 12.75>13.00 specific gravity. I now have a BATTERY TENDER on several batteries. They charge at an out put of .75 amps....available in both 6 volt and 12 Volt.....power consumption is so little not worth calculating

Jiles, I had that problem once with a Briggs OHV engine, turned out the valves needed to be adjusted to the proper clearance so the compression was less when cranking. It started fine after adjusting the valves, bought 2 batteries and almost a starter before I found out what the problem was, Chuck

Jiles, you have two choices. Take battery to any auto store and have them load test it. Or invest
in a battery conductivity tester. If you have as many batteries as I do, it's well worth it.

Hello jiles,
Not the battery if the voltage stays above
9.6 v while crancking.
Check your connections!

Guido.

B&D and chucksoliver77 are right. If your old battery has broken cell connectors or just terribly sulfated plates, it will show normal volts with no load, but drop to nothing under load.

Also B&S OHV engines amd likely many others with loose valves will not crank with even healthy battery and starter. Only 3-4 thousanths too loose will make them impossible to start.

Along with Chuck and Jon, my B&S valves were adjusted incorrectly from the factory. I wasted one battery before finally getting the correct tip.

Charged the battery all day, charger showed full charge. I installed the battery in another lawn tractor with the same results. Battery showed 12.88 volts.
I have no way to check the battery, Ill just buy a new one.
Guess it breaks down under load.

Like the 8 flashlight batteries I had that showed over 1.5 volts each, but wouldn't even make a bulb glow!

Hello Niles,

That sounds like a battery voltage soon after coming off the charger. A volt meter at the
battery terminals will tell you if you need one. It sounds like the battery may have a
bad connection between cells. Breaks down under load. Another battery may be in order,

Guido

Battery in riding mower only two years old. Had been starting but did notice it balked a little a couple times but engine fired easy so it took off. Next time, no crank. Jump started , checked charging voltage, above 14 volts. Mowed lawn couple hours, restarted a couple times ok. Next time, no crank again. About 12.6 or 7 no load voltage. Load test, would not even hold 10 amps. Removed battery, hooked up a test light and let it discharge battery down to nothing. Recharged, run it down again with light, recharged. Load tested good. Put back in mower, ran all summer no problem then same thing this fall. Ran it down again, recharge, load tested good with carbon pile tester. Never know for darn sure about batteries. Oh, also checked for drain when shut off. Using on my trail camera now and put that battery in mower.
