I discovered this old auger in the attic of an old summer kitchen that I am fixing up. I haven't a clue to what kind of machine it may be from or what it did, but it is carved from a single piece of wood! What an amazing piece of craftsmanship and to me a work of art. Some of the fluting is broken away but otherwise fairly well in tact.

Or, from an old hand crank washing machine. My grama had one that had a wooden peg disk to agitate the clothes.

Whoever whittled that was certainly talented. Then they probably only got about fifty cents for their work.

Well that is a cool find! Did your Grandpa like to whittle? Haven't got a clue as to what it was for but very nice.

Do you suppose the strip nailed on was to repair wear or just make it more wear resistant?

It could have been turned on a slow turning lathe, still takes a skilled craftsman.

That is a find . We rebuilt a lathe for a family the
was total wood , gears and all . From our resourses this
could have been used in grist mill or other mill as a
short transfer shaft . Tha round end may be removable
by screw threads . One of better resourses for info. I
have found is the Henry Ford if they dont know they
know who does .
