Bad week, ugly x-ray pics

My son Nick was in a wreck on his motorcycle on Wed. night. A woman pulled out in front of him at an intersection. We don't know the details yet as he doesn't remember other than seeing her pull out. We know he went through a window since he was covered in glass. Luckily he was in full protective gear which he always wore, even the gloves which he usually didn't. Even so he ended up with a badly broken arm and some other injuries that required surgery. He was in surgery for over 6 hours on thurs. Here are the x-rays of his arm.

His protective gloves protected his hands and wrists from severe damage as did his coat which kept him from breaking ribs. The gloves were totally busted and his helmet was damaged as well. Somehow he went through a window as he was covered in glass.

On top of his arm he had other injuries that required surgery to fix and he has a significant concussion. He also has trouble with feeling in his other arm, altho no visible injuries.

The surgeries went well and he should recover fully and should be discharged today.

There is nothing that I know of that is as horrible as watching a child hurting. It certainly has been a long few days, but I think the worst is behind us now.

Did she pull out in front of him..??

With many years of experience, I KNOW how people will MAKE eye contact, then pull right out in front of you..

Hope he can sue the CRAP out of her..

Ron..

We'll keep him in our prayers for good healing with no complications.

We'll be thinking of you and Mrs. JonF too.

I ride too. You have to watch the wheels of the potentially offending vehicle, have the brakes covered, and making plans to take evasive maneuvers. I watch the wheels for rotation, I don't look at the drivers's eyes, usually there is "nobody home." I narrowly avoided a crash when a young woman pulled out in front of me one day. I had to stop, and after I managed to shift down to first gear, she blew the horn and flipped me off!
We are praying for swift recovery! God bless!

That's not just an ugly xray, it is a super repair. Just had to answer this one because as well as being a farmer, and a rider, I am an MD, so I have to empathize in all ways with your son. Best wishes for recovery. Glad your son was wearing his protective gear.

That is not good at all. With the doctors now days he will be back to good health soon. I know it's bad, but it could be much worse. I ride some, and am always on the lookout idiot drivers. Stan

I ride too. Last "bad one" had nothing to do with idiot drivers.
A deer (four point buck) hit me from the side.
That one got me a nice helicopter ride to the hospital.
Still here, still riding.
Nick will recover but it will take some time.
Wishing you and the whole family the best Jon.

That hurts me to look at those X rays. Had a few bones screwed back together over the years including two of my vertebra wired back together. Hope he has a
quick recovery.

Good that it was limited to that damage. Failure to yield has been the cause of the last 4 accidents my students have gotten into 1 on a cycle, the others in cars. There is so much distracted driving beyond drinking, that putting an end to the cell phone operation in cars should be made law. When the car is in gear, the composing or sending of cell data should be impossible. Jim

Our mayor got run over and drug in a very similar accident a few months ago. He's still using a cane and arm brace. The driver was a young girl with either a revoked or suspended DL.

Aside from the obvious cell phone distractions, I think a lot of vehicles have too many built in distractions such as multi-function screens and knobs. You should not have to take your eyes off the road to switch the radio or operate environmental controls.

Situation awareness has gotten pretty poor in our insulated 4 wheel cocoons.

Makes me especially queasy as I just took my son today to take the road test for his cycle endorsement. I have ridden for 30 plus years, and still fear the other guy more than anything. Hope he heals quickly!

Hi
Sorry to read this news I hope he makes a full recovery and in good time to. sometimes all that gear is wonderful. In my cousins case it didn't
help, he was killed on his Dads birthday, leaving a fairly new wife and small child. His dad figured it was him and his family knocking on the door
for birthday supper, it was 2 cops with the news!. My other cousins wife was working ER that day to she finished her shift 10 mins before he got
there, she would of got a nasty shock to.
You are very lucky to still have your son, and thats the reason I never took bikes on the road, we had them on the farm for livestock work and left
it at that.. It might not be your mistake that kills you on a bike, more so than in a car or other vehicle.
Regards Robert

Fellow hit two deer in front of my house a couple of years ago. 11 breaks in the ankle area. Took the poor guy a while to heal up from that one.

I just cringe when I see these pretty young girls riding with shorts and flip flops.

I hope he has a speedy recovery with no long lasting injuries.

I sold my bikes 20 years ago. One of the few things in life that really scares me, too many distracted drivers.

Rick

jon, sure am sorry to hear that! Those are some nasty breaks, but looks like someone did a super job on repairs. I would say I wish him a speedy recovery, (well, I do, really,) but those things take time. So I will just say wishing for the best for him and the entire family.
