Stopped honda from dieseling

I have a 20 hp Honda on a T5D, terramite. When I work it hard, the engine wanted to diesel,
sometimes run backwards. So to fix the problem, I installed a toggle switch to remove the power
from the carburetor solenoid, switch on the left. It takes about 2 seconds for carb to run out of
fuel, engines doesn't diesel.

That solenoid should prevent dieseling,it's meant to be switched with the ignition switch so fuel stops. Basically was a fix when they started running them so lean for emissions. A slightly richer mixture will make your engine run cooler and likely fix the diesel issue too

I have a kohler engine on a lawn mower that would diesel and backfire when I would shut it off. I started leaving it run about half throttle before turning off the key and now it just coasts to a stop without all the dieseling and backfireing.

When a engine diesels it usually means means it hot, and you should leave it idle for a short time before shutting it down. No engine should be shut down immediately after working it hard.

Perplexed, I was told the electric shutoff on my Kohler shut off the load circuit only. When the engine is idling it is obviously running on the idle circuit so the solenoid does no good at stopping popping and dieseling. A dealer told me to idle it down to cool it down but open the throttle when I shut it down because it will be running on the load circuit that has been blocked by the solenoid needle. I have tried shutting it down with the throttle open and it does not diesel so maybe he knows what he is talking about.

The manual for a 20 horse Kohler I have says shut it off with it throttled up. Must be why. It's never
dieseled so I haven't done it.

The solenoid don't respond that fast on a honda or a kohler. I have both. It takes about 2 seconds of run time before all the gas is gone on a honda. It takes about 4-5 seconds on my 20 hp kohler. On my kohler, I just removed the kill wires going to the ignition modules from the switch, so when I turn the key off, the solenoid is turned off. I couldn't easily find the kill wires on the honda. It was easier to just install a switch.

Forget what you are told. Remove power to
catb solenoid on kohler, mine takes about 5
seconds at an idle to die.
