Case International 485 clutch

Just had the clutch replaced for $1400. When the clutch is depressed slightly in neutral I hear a chattering noise. Looking at it from the inspection plate, it looks like the noise is coming from the throw out bearing just before it contacts the pressure plate. If you depress the clutch fast like you normally would in operation, no noise of course. Is this a problem that would wear out the bearing or pressure plate prematurely?

Hi Doug, I would assume that during the clutch replacement that the throw out and pilot bearing would have been replaced.
Some later models of 485 and 495 had a throw out bearing that contacted the pressure plate fingers all the time. Check to see if
your 485 has a clutch return spring that goes on the clutch pedal lever to up under the dash support. If it has a clutch return
spring then it is the older style throw out bearing that doesn't contact the pressure plate fingers all the time.
Which kind of transmission shifter does your 485 have, the old style 1 to 4 in "Z" pattern or the newer style "H" pattern?
If it has the older "Z" style on the R/H/L lever when in Neutral position try lifting this lever slightly above the Neutral
position and see if the noise disappears.

485 are all H shift pattern.

The 2nd clutch we put in our 495 did that chattering, no ill effects for the 9 years it lasted, clutch only died when transmission bearing let go and soaked clutch with hytran.....

Sound was annoying though, was dealer installed with new pressure plate and machined flywheel etc.

That sounds to me like the pressure plate fingers are not adjusted to an even height.Have someone depress the the clutch pedal slowly and watch to see if the throw out bearing contacts all fingers simultaneously.May not be a major problem, but,if I paid $1400 I would want it right.Mark

It is probably that the release lever height is not the same one all the levers. A reason for that happening on a clutch job like yours is the flywheel has not been machined properly. It is very possible that when the upper level of the flywheel was machined there was a radius left on t5he outer edge of the cut. That prevents the pressure plate from being fully seated in the flywheel which in turn causes the uneven lever height. Look carefully at where the pressure plate sets in the flywheel to make sure the amount of pressure plate sticking out from the flywheel is even all the way around the flywheel.

Pilot bearing, throw out bearing, and pressure plate were all replaced. Flywheel was removed and machined. Clutch return spring was put on with new installation, but I do not remember one being on before. There are holes for it.

Sounds like from the responses, that either the wrong clutch kit was installed or the release level height or pressure plate fingers are not adjusted correctly. Pressure plate LOOKS like it is on correctly, with no obvious wobble in the flywheel when the engine is running.

Mechanic said he would come look at it last Monday the 2nd... no show yet. Looks like I will have to have one of the mechanics I should have asked to do the job access the situation. Thanks for your help..
