Mozzarella Cheese?

A year ago, I could buy a 5 pound bag of shredded Mozzarella Cheese for $9.48. Since then the bag has dropped to 4 pounds. Today, I went to buy a bag and now it is 3 pounds for the same price ($9.48).

What happened to dairy prices?

The farm price of milk has fallen to near break even or even unprofitable levels again. I have not kept up with what the demand for cheese is doing. The export market can play heck with cheese prices. So the fluid milk prices can be down and cheese still be high.

The shrinking size of package contents really drives me nuts. Take sugar, it is now a four LBS. bag not five LBS. Dog food is a 40 lbs. not fifty. It is like the companies think we consumers are too stupid to not notice the cost per pound or ounce is going up. I guess they could be right with much of the population these days. I wonder how many can figure the cost per pound/ounce??? I bet that is not taught in the schools today. Knowing how to use a condom is more important use of class time these days. They could be right with the diseases we have today too. LOL Life sure seemed simpler when I was younger.

Last year you were paying a little under $2.00 a pound for 5 lbs. Would you pay over $3.00? That's what your cheese would cost now. So it' would be around $15.00 for the same 5 lbs. Consider all the costs that have gone up in the past year, the extra taxes and insurance costs across the nation. It all gets passed on to the consumer. The price of milk has little to do with what you see in the store.

This week the little brick packages of cheese (8 oz) were 4 for $5 That makes the cheese $2.50 a pound which seems very reasonable to me and I eat a lot of cheese. Lots of cheese is closer to $10 a pound and I buy some of that too. Food is Cheap! Anybody that does not think so needs to quit their job in town and grow their own.

Bret, In the middle of your post you mentioned that the cost of everything is going up. As someone who quit dairying because after 35 years of hearing how costs have gone up, for feed to hauling(which was the last straw)and everything except milk, I wish the dairymen lots of luck.

Once they downsize the product and keep the same price I stop buying whatever it is. The first day the Tropicana juice went to 14oz from 16 they lost me for a morning juice. Coffee only now. No yogurt same trick.

.... and..... How about dog food??? A few years ago, it was about $8 a bag for 50#, and corn was $3.50. The corn went to $8, and dog food went to $19. Corn is back down to $3.50, but even TSC wants $19 a bag. What am I missing????

It's not just your cheese -

Go into a grocery store and take a closer look at everything you buy - MUCH of it has reduced in quantity to keep prices level.

Just good ol' hidden inflation. Nothing to see here folks, the economy's in great shape, move along.

Kinda like not counting people who can't find jobs when calculating the unemployment rate - all smoke and mirrors.

Condom usage can help prevent more stupid people from stumbling and bumbling into this, so not necessarily a total waste of time :/
As far as life seeming simpler when you were younger, it was.

(quoted from post at 13:54:18 11/02/15) That's the 'big boys' lining their pockets and hoping you won't notice.....

Is it? I wonder. Since the price of everything except fuel has risen over the past year, much less over 5, 10 or 25 years, I have to wonder just how much real pocket lining there is going on. Yeah, it's very popular to buy into the theory that it's all the 1 percents fault, but lets remember a couple of things. Compared to 2000 we have 573% more money in circulation, so your dollar is worth a lot less than in 2000. Tax revenue is up 64% since 2000, that money comes from someplace- the consumer and taxpayer. With a devalued dollar (573% more dollars out there) and increased taxes, to say nothing of state and local taxes, health care costs, etc, is it really any wonder you get for the same money? You can blame it on the 1%, but they pay almost 40% of the income tax and the top 10% pay 70% of the income tax. Yeah, Warren Buffets secretary pays a higher income tax rate than he does, but that's because Warren doesn't have an "income" like we do. He lives off the interest on his billions, billions he made by investing, starting at age 11! I'm getting off track, the point is that class warfare, blaming the 1% for all the worlds ills, just doesn't answer all the questions.

At that price I would be happy.
Just checked todays flyer and Cracker Barrel Mozzarella is on sale for $11.99 for 907g which is 2 lbs, that works out to be $6.00 lb.
With the exchange rate for CDN currency today being .76 that works out to $4.56 lb US/
The shredded stuff they charge nearly double for.

Dertermined- 'Cracker Barrel' a is top shelf brand name around here. The cheese I used in my
example was 'Store Brand'(Generic).

Well, you need to look at the size of your coffee can.

"we consumers are too stupid to not notice the cost per pound or ounce is going up"

I don't think we're too stupid, but we bite the bullet and pay it.
Because we want it and because we can.
It won't change as long as we agree to pay their price.
Simple supply and demand.
