Thinking about a tablet..Any advice?

Looking at tablets and the choices are dizzying.. I know some of you have good tech knowledge, so I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on what kind and size of tablet to choose? Prices are all over the place, some are reconditioned.., some are new. Are the $50 ones any good? How about $75 with a keyboard?

Hello johnlobb

Get a kindle! I got one six months ago, and after a while(learning curb), I use it daily.

I have a Samsung Tab 3, I like it alright, if I had it to do over I would have went with the Tab 4 for a bigger screen. It works fine for me I use it for preaching notes and now that I am used to it it works fine. Searching the wed is also very good, seems to have good speed. Samsung's are reasonably priced as well, up in the hundreds.

Samsung is a great choice. I like the 10", my wife likes the 8" because it fits in her purse. I have an iPad for work but for personal use I'll take the Samsung every time. No iTunes entanglements.

Kind of depends what you want to do with it. I needed an Android tablet with built in GPS, but didn't need much besides that. Ended up with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 in 7 inch size. Now I use it almost as much as my laptop. Just make sure the tablet you get has all the stuff you need, whether GPS, Bluetooth, wi-fi, headphone jack, expansion memory, etc, as not all will have them.

Kinda like the Ford vs. Chevy debate. I was a Windows/Android user before. Went to an Apple IPad and will never look back again. Yes, the cost is quite a bit more, but I am hooked on it now.

I've been an android user on phone and tablet all along. Have had a couple Asus Tablets with transformer keyboards. Folds up nice... work well with my various Motorola and Samsung phones...

But my wife loves her iPhone and iPad and iPad mini and my daughters iPod... and they just don't play well together. Cant share calendars, music, sometimes texting is weird between us...

Anyway I am now in the transition mode...I have a new IPhone, which now works great, but I still have the Asus Tablet which I am using right now. When this dies I will probably make the transition to an IPad.

The moral of the story is get what works with your wifes devices. Each system is good, just pick one and stick with it. Also While I don't think the top of the line most expensive product is necessary unless you are a gamer and really know what you are doing with the device, I do believe cheap reconditioned products are often just that CHEAP and SLOW.

I tend to find mid priced products $350 - $550 are adequate for me and my daily uses.

Good Luck, Grant

Couldn't have said it better. I too went the Ipad route.

I don't have either, just a Dumb Phone. My wife was looking into the market a couple of years ago and looking at the clones to save money. I told her, get the one that all the others are "trying" to be like (IPad). Yes it cost more but has all the things the others are copying. She got the IPad "something" and loves it.

Just My Thought

My wife has TWO Samsung tablets! OK, she originally only had the one but "inherited" the one she bought for me. I never used the thing....Her and her brother were raving about theirs - telling me that I HAD to have one....I'll never know WHY I needed it.....Waste of money to me.

I have both an Ipad and a LG 7" android tablet. I have had the Ipad for four or five years now, won it in a raffle. I just got the android a couple of weeks ago for free when making changes to my cellular plan. The Ipad is wifi only and the android I can turn off the cellular data so as not to run up data usage.

The android is handy when away from home or other wifi connection, however I still use the Ipad when possible due to the larger screen size and my eyesight getting weaker as I age.

Both are used mainly for internet, email and for e-books. I still depend on my laptop for all other use.

If I had to buy one today I would probably go with an android based tablet but with the largest screen I could get. There seems to be more free apps available for the android than for the Apple based products.

I tried an Android tablet. Hated it. But then, I hate this laptop I'm using. I like a PC and simple to use programs. No smart phone either. I suppose if you can get used to a tablet format it's okay, but I simply can't get the hang of it.

Not a tablet but i have a Acer Chromebook paid about $130 2-3 years ago
and love having it any where i need it. .02

I know what you're saying, Bret. I got rid of my "smart" phone too. The tiny places to put my fingers were a real pain. I was always going to the wrong place. I hated it.

What phone and computer do you use? If you have an iPhone then iPad is the only choice. If you have an Android phone then it doesn't matter.

The thing to keep in mind that a tablet is a "media consumption" device. Watch videos, read books, maybe read forums and emails if you don't need to type much. Anything that requires more than a small amount of typing and you need a real keyboard and big monitor.

Johnlobb,

As others have said: what are your main interest. Some of these are optimized for particular functions.

Most Kindles are for books, while some will do movies. A few are 3G capable with the color Kindles requiring a subscription while the black and white 3G Kindles are free 3G. My Wife's Kindle Fire is wifi equipped so you need a 3G/4 G hotspot modem or wireless router if you have optical cable service.

The Samsungs has a number of Galaxy devices and price varies accordingly. Most are blue tooth equipped so you can use a blue tooth keyboard if you want while some others come with a key board. I think Galaxies are more oriented to internet surfing,
Do you want a built in camera. etc. A lot tablet have some neat functions such bluetooth adapters where you can use opdII Can auto analysis. AHHH too much. I can't chose either.

I have a Samsung tab 4, That I am using right now for this post. I do my personal e mails with it. Good camera too. I am satisfied with it.

If you can afford the $$, go with the iPad. In my line of work I manage corporate mobile devices, and we have both iOS (iPhone, iPad) as well as Androids. By far the preferred choice is iPhone and iPad. You can purchase the Android devices for less, but usually when $$ is taken out of the equation, the preference is the ipad. I purchased an Andoid tablet for my wife a few years ago, and ended up getting her an iPad as she was not using the Android. She actually uses the iPad, although not as much as I thought she would. Since I have to perform troubleshooting of issues I have both types, but the Androids stay in the bag until I have to use them. Although this often gets into the old Windows vs. Linux type discussion. There is a reason why Windows based Pc's outsell others, and for the same reason iPads outsell their Android counterparts (or at least they did the last I knew). Now, if you want to save a few $$, and just need to check mail and surf the web, you can get by with an Android. Just my opinion, but if I had my way I would only support iOS devices, but we support some Androids in other parts of the world and it is apparently much more costly to purchase iOS devices in those countries.

I use a Dell Venue 8 pro. I bought it so I wasn't tied to the PC. I can use it anywhere in the house. Keep in mind that you will have to buy a wireless modem so you can use the internet with the tablet. I also have a gadget (Netgear) that I can use my TV for a large monitor. You'll need a flat screen TV for this though. This comes in handy if I want to watch youtube videos on a larger screen. I also have a Netflix account so I can watch movies on the TV screen. The camera works pretty good too. I can take pictures, edit them, then post then on any forum page. I use Google image editing program for editing pictures. It's called Picasa. I did buy a keyboard to use with the tablet, but found it is unhandy using it sitting in my favorite chair. So I use the onscreen keyboard. Holding the tablet in one hand and typing with the other takes some getting used to.

My laptop went out a few years ago and I had wanted to try a tablet in place of it. I have a company iphone - which I really like, but didn't want to spend the $$$'s on a ipad until I could try out a small screen vs my laptop.

I went to walmsrt and bought a $75 android tablet. It was OK, short battery life and small virtual keyboard, but seemed to get the job done. After about 6 months or so, it quit charging. Along about the same time, best buy discounted the iPad mini and I bought one. Wonderful - highly recommend. Somehow it magically is sync'd with my iphone, long battery life, very easy to use. Fast forward, we bought a Mac mini desk top PC to pay some online bills and it too is sync'd with my iphone and ipad.

I used to know everything anyone would need to know about pc's, but with wife and kids and the fast lane life, I just want my tablet, phone and desktop to work as simple as a washing machine. Throw in the clothes, pour in the detergent, shut the lid and hit the start button and it takes care of the rest. IMHO - the apple product does this extremely well.

Good luck,
Bill

And multi colored chalk - I have both ! In fact I have 3 slates - antique school use items, and by the gar they still work fine. ;^)

I tried a $60 unit from Amazon with a removable keyboard (not cheap, but wanted to try a unit I could take to the shop and use when the 'lightbulb' went on). Android based. Well I messed with it for a couple of weeks and got it to 'do stuff' that I wanted (house Wi-Fi covered it). Cool ! Well when I sent the first e-mail to my son, most of the letters came out in foreign language alphabet - what the heck. Tried a few more times - same. Took to trusted tech outfit - baffled. The upside is, I had to mail the unit to China for a refund - $64 on the slow boat. Amazon covered the cost within 3 days. I like Amazon.

Hello Vernomn,

Yep, I am on my kindle now. The camera is fine on this one too!
