Bridge Cranes value?

Not unusual for the strange things that we bid on. Recently I looked at an old foundry that is being repurposed. They want to have all the bridge cranes and tracks removed. My question is there any value other than scrap for I'm guessing 25 year-old cranes that haven't been used in 10 years? What do you think?

Do a little internet searching as there are places that buy bridge cranes just like there are for other equipment. In a case like your in, anything over scrap value will be profit, and with scrap as low as it is right now, it would probably be a pretty good profit....

As far as their uses, age doesn't matter all that much. In fact one I know of one RR that is running a 100 ton overhead in their shop that is nearly 100 years old. It was put together with rivets, it's so old. Over the years it has taken care of, and the electrical part upgraded, but the crane itself is old enough no parts are available for it. I know this as we had to have several brake bands custom made for them a few years back, and then install them when they were complete.

There are companies that recondition and resell overhead cranes. 25 years is not that old. You should be able to find them on line or in a phone book. Can't help you on the value.

I agree with old Bob, they would have value to someone. The equipment shop I worked in has two bridge cranes, they are now over 35 years old and still in service. Of course they received regular service and scheduled inspections. An acquaintance of mine bought one out of a shop being demolished, the mfgr. was still in business and they helped him a lot with installing it and doing some re-conditioning to put the crane in service in his shop. Saved him a big chunk of money. I would think if the company is still in business they would be of way more than scrap value.

Getting me to buy a small used bridge crane I could use in my personal shop or garage would be possible if the price was right.

Getting me to buy a used large industrial bridge crane for my employees to use would be next to impossible even if the price was less than scrap.
Just to much liability involved with it.
In fact the only way I would touch this is if you sold it to a rebuilder and I then bought it from the rebuilder with new certification papers.

If you can get the information about them I will ask one of my relatives that is the field manager for one of the largest overhead crane companies here in Florida. They buy and recondition bridge cranes as well as sell new ones. They handle all of our overhead crane service at all of our mines and chemical plants here in Florida. I had them in my plant this week repairing the Demag hoist on one of our portal reclaimers

Couple of years ago I bought some small stuff at an online auction and went to pick it up at the location: a BIG industrial building in an area of Detroit that seen better days (meaning BAD area now). Building had numerous bridge cranes, can't remember how many. Auction worker said guy paid $100k for the building. I said WHAT? This would not have been a bad price anywhere than where it was located. He said that they were going to strip the cranes and they were headed for South America. Buyer had already sold them and stood to make a 6 figure profit. Then, he'd just walk away from the building.

John that's what I was thinking anyone needing a crane of this size would want something new or rebuilt for safety sake. We have run across things like this before very expensive equipment that nobody wants used. I think trying to find a rebuilder would be a good idea if we get the job.

A bunch of Amish and Mennonite guys up my way have farm shops with bridge cranes. Pretty sure they arent certified....
